While I am sitting at my computer reading the forums it pops into my head that i want to replace the speakers in my 1998 firebird which is equipped with the monsoon stereo system. Without doing any research on this yet I am wondering if any of you guys have done this and what kind of speakers you got. Since i live in michigan the winter months are a good time to work on your car and you get a lot of ideas like this...

crutchfield can tell you what direct fit replacements are available but you need to replace the system as a whole, Can't just change speakers or head unit. Unless you find aftermarket monsoon compatible system, which they do make and they also make a adapter to plug a aftermarket head unit into a monsoon system. Good Luck.

I LOVE CAR AUDIO MY 3rd Love, I re-did everything in my 96 bird, wiring mounting speakers, headunit, amplifiers, subz, ect, switch ur monsoon radio for multiple reasons
1: The OHM Impedence that runs from the factory radio amplifier to your speakers are configured to run at the same OHM impedence, changing to a new set of speakers or a new reciever might cause a conflict that will make your speakers sound like poo.
2: An aftermarket headunit provides more power to ur speakers(will actually make your stock ones sound better b/c of the new alloted power to it)
3: Upgrade capabilities, extrenal amps and more speakers!!! pre amped outs on ur new reciver will enable this while keeping ur factory one ull have to buy high level input amp that makes sound quality shitty.
4: It looks so much better ladies love it
5; Buy from crutchfield, they have everything you need - harnesses adapater and if you buy ur speakers and headunit there they give em to you for free!

If you have any more questions and wanna get serious about upgrading your sound system Email me and ill tell you what you need, I have some car audio related stuff I need to sell also.
HOPE THIS POST WAS EASY TO FOLLOW

the only bad thing is most of the better head units dont work with your radio steering wheel controls. thats the only reason i wanted to keep my stock head unit. but that didnt last too long

I have never cared enough about the steering wheel controls to sacrifice sound quality...

Just make sure you don't go back with Monsoon speakers.

I spent $250 and completely replaced every speaker in the car with original equipment.

Then I decided to turn up Lenny Kravitz. That "I want to get away" song. SNAP, CRACKLE, POP. That ended the life of a bout 3 or 4 of the 10 speakers. What a waste, I only had 3 days of good sound quality. $250 down the drain in 10 seconds. I've been listening to rattlebox speakers ever since.

P.S. Mr. Kravitz you owe me some money

I have an aftermarket headunit and still use my steering wheel controls. They sell a little box on crutchfields site.

the little box only works with some head units, thats why i said some. and if your into the high end stuff it doesnt work with any.

i personally use the steering wheel controls every day and i think if they are there then they should have a use. or the steering wheel should be replaced.

Ok here's the deal my friend... i have a 2000 firebird and believe me i hated the stock sound system. Your firebird can have 6 by 9s however i would not hang them in the hatchback area. Here is what i did, on either side of the rear "seats" there are 7" rounds, pull those out and take the speaker cover off. now make sure you trace the hole where the speaker was on the metal as a reference. you can, if you are willing and patient, fit 6 by 9s int this spot. make sure that you drill into the metal at several point to hold the speakers in place. when you put the panel back on you might have to cut some of it off, i did not however, and if you do cut some off you should be able to take it to any reputable sound shop and they can make some covers for you out of plexiglass. not only will it sound better, louder, and clearer with the 6 by 9s closer to you, it will look awesome with plexiglass covering them. I personally used smoked plexiglass with blue neons on either side of the speakers... it looks killer at night. Also I went with 2 12" Diamond Audio M6s in the "trunk" These subs are killer if you want quality. For my front speakers I went with 6.75" kicker coaxials. These put out nice treble and mid but no bass. That is why you are gonna need those 6 by 9s. For my 6 by 9s I went with the 3-way kicker coaxials. Good all around performance especially with mid range sounds.

I hope this helps.
