trans oil

I dont know what model it is but its your regular 1,2 3, and overdrive.what kind of tranny oil to use?and does any one know wher that brain box is to the tranny for making it shift?thanks wayne

the automatic is an AW4 and the fluid to use is Mercon type ATF,

Hay long time, anyhow, I have a 00 XJ, just did a fluid filter on the tranny. The manuel in the Jeep said Mercron/Dexron II. I was told that M/D III is a viable substitute. Is this true, or should I be running ATF3. It seems to shift fine, no noticeable problems. XJ has 98K on her. Tranny is the AW4.

If you used a combo m/dII fluid you should be fine. My Mitchell reference says only the mercon is recommended so I would stick with that as much as possible. Using a little bit of DII for top up won't hurt though.


I wouldn't go to a +3 or +4 ATF though unless it is specifically recommended.

I could have swore the manual for my 96 said to use the ATF+3 for the tranny, what makes one different against the other. I've got the +3 in there now, am I going to have trouble? Does one cause more heat or slippage than the other?

Use exactly what the manual says. Especially if that is a +3 or +4. The info I have says not to sub a +3 for a +4 if a +4 is called for. You can change up from a +3 to a +4 but don't change back to a +3.

gtmud's jeep is a 2000 model, glassman's is a 1990. They could specifiy different fluids. Jeep ATF specs changed from model to model and year to year it seems

AAAAAARGH! I just looked back in the manual! It says Dexron III! I am an idiot. I could have swore I saw ATF +3 in the book. So, did I do damage? Am I going to be okay to flush it out and put Dexron III back in?

I know that using something other than ATF+3 has caused problems in some other vehicles but I don't recall anything being mentioned about using the ATF+3 where a dextron product is called for.

Somehow this change doesn't concern me as much as if it was the other way but then I may have not heard all the facts yet, I'll keep looking.....

How much of the ATF+3 do you have in your transmission??

Have you noticed any changes in how it shifts since the change??

All the fluid in my tranny is ATF+3. Last summer, shortly after I bought it, I decided to give it a total go through, plugs & wires, fluids, the works. When I did the tranny fluid, I dropped the pan, changed the filter, and replaced with ATF+3. I drove it a day or two, then changed fluid again, and then a third time a couple days later. My object was to get all old fluid out, and in essence give it a home made 'total flush'. I have changed the fluid once more just a short while ago.

I don't seem to notice any negative effects, it seems to be shifting okay, not slow shifts but fairly clean, firm shifts.

I guess my primary concern is tearing something up or wearing unecessarily, and should I change back...?

I have a 93 XJ and a 96ZJ both say to use dextron 11 which is 3 now. The Chrysler Tranny Techs I talked to says always to use 7176 that dextron should never be used. They say it was a mistake for it to be put in the manuals. After reading both manuals in the Trans section it says to use 7176 or dextron. Go figure!

Ah. Okay. So where does that leave us? DexIII or ATF+3? Leave +3 in or change back out to DexIII? Thanks

I'd leave the +3 in it, especially if you aren't noticing any adverse effects after all the time it's been in there.

There is something about the additives in the 7176 + series ATF that really works in the chrysler tranies.

I've had 2-3 shift problems with my 44re for more than a year now. I decided to try a fluid change to the +4 from the +3 I was using. After sucking out 3 qts thru the dipstick tube and installing 3 qts of the +4, I've run it for about 500 miles, it has started to shift almost normal. I'm going to do another part change today and run it another 500 and see what happens. If it keeps doing what it's been doing and maybe improves some more that would be soooooo goooood!!
