89 eighty eight backfireing through intake

I have a 89 olds eighty eight with the 3.8 v6 that is back fireing through the intake. Or at least i think it is. When i removed the air filter the noise got much louder. Does anyone have any idea what this may be?

I have a 1986 Olds 88, mine was doing the same thing...try changing the mass air flow. The are around $55...core return is around $15. Took me about 5 minutes to unhook battery and replace the unit and hook everything back up. Took care of the backfiring and helped the gas mileage.

If the car is backfiring through the intake there may be three possible problems. One there is a coil misfiring and causing one of the cylinders to fire at the wrong time. Two there is a sticking valve or three a bad camshaft. Start with the coil and then do a compression check to see if you have a bad valve or bad camshaft. You can also pull a valve cover and turn the engine over watching to see if the valves move properly if they stay open or do not open at all then the cam is bad. Try the coil first.
