Display case

I've thought a long time to build a display case. A week ago I decided to see if I could plan a simple desing and I was pleased with my desing. :)
Here's a 3D model of the display case.
http://koti.mbnet.fi/scherman/vitriini/vitriini.jpg
After I had drawn the model, I did do some calculations and decided that the display case is going to be 1300mm(=51") wide, 800mm (=31") tall and 120mm(~5") deep. The wood is 15mm(~3/5") thick.
I'll build the shelves(?) out of 8mm thick clear acrylic glass. For the backplate I'll use acrylic mirror if I can find some.. And to front the I'll use clear acrylic..
Yesterday I bought some wood and decided to begin the building. So far I've cut the slots for the shelves.
First I sawed two 5mm deep grooves with a metal saw blade.

Then I milled with the Dremel the center of two grooves.

And after a couple of hours work, the result is this:

I still have to sand every part before I can start assembling the case.
Feel free to comment. :)

Yes, I carefully examined his display case and took a lot of influences to my display case. Thanks Alex! :)

I've assembled and covered the display case with lacquer.
In my opinion, the case looks pretty good, although I had to use brush for the lacquer.
Also, I looked some prices of clear plastic and I was stunned by the prices. A piece of one square meter plastic, 8mm thick, costs around 100€..
I'll have to ask if I could get some kind of discount.. :)

I was also quite astounded at the price of plexiglass when I was getting it for my spraybooth. I think you could try using regular glass, it should be somewhat cheaper, and look better, you'll just need to be careful with it and think everything through.

tick plexi is expensive. if you get it smaller, it's not that expensive. I use it for different mod (no modelling) I use 3mm or 4mm and it's cheaper than glass.
8mm is VERY tick for a "window"
My Model dispay is mode with Glass. it cost about 8$ by row + 30$ for the window. I can put 8 model by row, 8 row (64 model) Will need to built a new one soon

I'll use the 8mm plexi for the shelves. I'll ask if I could get some "left over" parts, I think it would be cheaper..
I don't know about the glass. I am not very keen to use it because altough I could get the glasses cut in the shop, the glasses still need a of bit work. (the front edge must curved)
To the front I'll put something like 2-3 mm thick plexi..

Well for me, the store cut it with rounded edge for about 1$ by cut..

Yup, the shop that cuts it can also finsh the edges. Wouldn't hurt if you ask around and see the situation beofre making a decision.

I got the display case finished.. Well, I didn't use plexi glass. :)
I talked with a friend of mine, who owns a local glass cutting shop, and he said that 8mm thick plexi bends over 3cm in a length of one meter.
I decided for the glass also because it was a lot more cheaper than plexi.
I got the mirror and the glasses for 58 euros..(a 50% discount.. :smokin: )
I am very pleased with the end result.
Here´s some pics..

Now, I just need a lot more cars so that the display case won't look so empty... :)

Nice work, but in my opinion the mirror ruined it all...
