Trouble Pumping Gas

OK...I know what you're thinking...How could any moron have trouble pumping gas?

I have a 99 Accent GL sedan, which has served me well. Never any significant problem that wasn't immediately handled by warranty. Recently, however, i've had a heck of a time putting gas in the thing. Not matter which service station I try, after a few seconds the pump will click off as if the tank is full, and it sprays gas all over the place. This never used to be a problem. I usually get so frustrated and/or worried about getting gas all over my clothes that I leave the pump with only a couple of gallons.

Anyone else experienced this?

hmmm, I never heard of that happening to any vehicle. Plus, I do not recall seeing anything about that either in Webtech. I wonder if anyone else has an explanation. I'm curious myself to know what can cause such a thing. Unless there is a build up of gases in the tank, but that would cause me some concern.

I would guess that either your fuel cut off valve is not working properly or your fill vent vavle is not letting vapors escape see enhanced emission diagram for your model on the webtech site for diagram......or if the fill vent valve line was plugged/pinched it might cause this.

the only things that could be is either your holding the pump incorrectly (try pulling the handle out just al little bit or angle it differently) or you have a big ass dent in you gas tank im sorry but a car doesn't have a fuel cut off valve mazdateck is just a retard

I am not here to argue or belittle people but you make it very easy.......

If you do indeed look at the schematics (http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/iindex.asp?id=394875417#_394875417), you will see that the 1997-1998 Accent does have a Fuel Cut off valve located within the fuel tank, see diagram below.

The 1999 Aceent also has one, but its labeled Fuel Shut-Off valve..

Apparently Hyundai is using both name decriptions for the same part. They just changed its naming after the 1998 MY. Proof of that is at the bottom diagram for the Santa Fe. It shows the name label of "Fuel Shut-Off (cut) valve".

Now it seems like I've got some ideas on what's wrong. BTW...my check engine light came on, too. A buddy brought in his code reader and it reads P0455: EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large). Related problem?

But, from the details you guys have provided, it looks like this valve is inside the gas tank. Is this something the average guy (I can change oil, but not much more) can handle. Or should I head off to my mechanic?

Or, am I forever doomed to getting $1.75 worth of gas, and having $.75 worth on the side of the car and $.50 worth on the ground?

I reccomend you take it in to a qualified hyundai tech. They will hook up an evap tester and verify the leak so it is repaired correctly. If it is a valve on top of the tank than the tank will need to be lowered/removed for repair. mske sure you tell them of your original problem to

I can garauntee you it will be the canister close valve and filter the plug up and cause the fuel to shut off cause it cannot get out of the neck fast enough.
