I have a 97 lumina that is hard to shift when it is cold outside(less than
15 degrees). Also, it will leak transmission fluid. None of this happens
when it is warm out or if the car was in heated garage. Otherwise the
transmission works fine. It does not slip or hesitate.
Has anyone ever heard of this problem? I live in northeast Ohio.

A mechanic I took the car to monday said it was a
cv seal and he fixed it. He also said that the gear
shift is stiff in the cold because of all the plastic parts in the car.

The shifter cable usually gets stiff in the cold on these. Not a lot you can do, aside from replace it.

Just stumbled on to this post while looking for something else.
RE: the hard shifter lever. Remove the knee bolster from under the dash on the drivers side. locate the shifter cable, where it attaches to the column. You will probably notice a rusty piece of metal, this is what is causing the hard shifter linkage, not the shifter cable. Just put some grease on it and work it a bit and it will free right up to like new.
