alternator overcharging the system

how in the world? i only hear of alternators undercharging or just not charging at all, but over charging? the pulley must be going mad fast or something

i guess thats kidna what the shop guy told my dad is that at one point the alternator must have over charged the system causign soem wires to burn out.

voltage regulator in the alternator is broken. the alternator puts out more than 12 volts, but the regulator basically tells it when to send juice to the rest of the system.
we had this problem on my roommates mkIII supra, it was registering 16 volts every time he hit the gas, and was blowing fuses and causing all kinds of mischief
