transmission service

ok, i have a 94 grand amGT wiht a 3.1 V6 and teh 4 speed auto trans with od. Ive only got 58k on my car and dont have any major transmission problems, just a few strange noises (kind of a scratchy sounding whitley noise?! when accelerating). The noise isnt an overwhelmingly loud noise and most people probably dont even notice it when riding in my car, so it doesnt "SEEM" to severe. Other than this noise hte trans shifts nice and smooth with no real problems.
The noise is a result of my running the car for a while while it was almost 2 quarts low on trans atf fluid. I never thought to check since i wasnt leaking anything, or so i thought and i didnt realize the problem until it started slipping out of gear. Anyways i filled it up full and havent had any problems whatsoever since, other than the noise.
This was about 3 months ago and still havent had a "problem" yet. and have put maybe 5 or 6k more miles on since.
Im wondering if i should get my fluid changed in a situation like this. Some people swear by transmission service and other people will say ot never do it and to leave it be if its working. I just need some input for a situation like this. Im not having problems, but the noise worries me that i might be harming the trans more by not having it flushed or getting the fluid/filter changed (especially when its cold outside b/c it gets even worse)
any suggestions or reccomendations would be great. thanks in advance for any input.
PS -- i bought the car used about 2 years ago with 40k miles on it and im guessing there has never been any previous trans service on the car and i have not done any.

A good fluid drain and filter change won't hurt anything just don't let the shop talk you into a flush. Most people who have their transmissions flushed end up with major problems after only a couple of months.

filter changes are a good thing there a parts that wear in side the trans and get trapped in the filter reducing flow 2 quarts low is not good you probbally burnt the clutches when is slipped out of gear but if it does not slip dont worry.

You can try a fluid and filter change but if it is slipping that bad you may be in need of a rebuild.

Read GTPDAD's reply.
Yours sounds like it's gone.
How many miles on your 1994 GP? It becomes a cost thing. Taken yours to a shop will cost you about $2000.00 to rebuild. "Bone yard" will run you about $100.00, but you have to do labor yourself. If you live up north at this time of the your, that sucks.
Good luck.
