CEL on and Check Trans light blinking.

After having the cel light come on and the check trans light blink I followed your directions and took my car to Autozone.
They got error code P1870. They couldn't come up with an answer.

I then took it to Goodyear for them to determine the exact problem.
They stated they didn't have the tools to diagnose the issue and recommended I take it to the dealer.
My issue with that is the last time I took it to the dealer they took the tranny apart and couldn't find anything (300 bucks later)

They said that if it happens again they would have to replace the transmission. Can someone give me a viable option?
I am willing to go to the dealer if necessary but the only symptoms
are the lights..

Is AAMCO worth a try?

I see from your profile this is in regards to a 2000 passport? right? I personally would not use AAMCO for anything. Way too may horror stories from that place, although I'm sure there's good ones out there. Generic definition of P1870 = "Transmission Component Slipping/ Transmission Mechanical Transfer Case 4x4 Switch Circuit Failure" It's possible isuzu/honda has slightly different wording for this OBDII code. What is the history of the unit? how many miles on it? have you done ATF changouts every 25-50000 miles? If you get absolutely no symptoms from it other that the CEL, I'd drive it ( & save for a new one)until it acts up, then replace it.

Ok.. its got 54,600 miles on it. Its not a 4X4 and I have had the atf changed out twice.

When you say you'd drive it and replace it you mean the transmission and not the car right?

I really enjoy my passport.

AAmco has fixed me up right in the past.

Anyone else??

P 1870 is a mystery code. Nobody seems to be able to diagnose or repair the problem without a rebuild.

I had the same thing and then had a rebuild. The tranny shop said there was about 20 000 kilometers of life left to the tranny. There was general wear and the seals were getting hard.

My suggestion would be to drop the tranny pan, change filter, than flush through cooler lines. If the light does not shut off, drive it until you notice a definite performance change. If you can get by for a while before you have to rebuild you can save up for the rebuild.

proper clean and flush is the usual fix for this concern
have seen a few do this when the fluid gets old and is breaking down this happens dont know why but it does and not on all
if this does not take care of it then have the torque convertor replaced

Thank you sir.. I will try that..
Light went away but I know it'll come back unless I do something.

P1870 could be set by: 1) range switch malfunction, 2) a mechanical failure of the shift solenoids, TCC solenoid or TCC PWM solenoid, 3) internal transmission failure, 4) an intermittent or incorrect engine speed signal.

I have never seen a range switch set a torque convertor code
ange switch usually sets p1750 =trans range switch illegal position

Well... it is from factory manual(hardcopy) '97 Rodeo for 4L30-E - DTC P1870 - Diagnostic Aids section. It also has STEP 2 in diagnostic chart what checks "does each selected transmission range match the scan tool "TR Switch" display?"
And in my book P0705 -Transmission Range Switch(Mode Switch) Illigal Position.
But it just a manual(which may be wrong) and, of course, I never experienced P1870 myself.
