I have a tranny question

I have a 00 V6 Auto Sport. The tranny is making some straining sort of whining noise when in drive while the brake is applied and the car is at a full stop. If I switch it to reverse, park or over to the sst mode it goes away.

It seems to build up it starts out a little quite then gets louder to the point where you cannot hear the engine at idle. I cedrtainly would appreciate some feedback.

I was a lincoln tech for 10 years, I've seen one other that did that. I believe, if my memory serves me, that it was the torq converter. I believe they had a few problems with that in the first year. Maybe a trans flush would help but probably not. Depending on the dealership you go to is wheather they say to service the trans or not(some say not because of no dipstick but there's not one because to many people put in the wrong trans fluid and burn the trans). I am a certified trans tech by ford and I'm telling it does need serviced after 60k miles with MERCON V not MERCON 3. It may have already gotten the front pump bushing in the trans also.

thanks for the feedback fry628, the humming/buzzing/squealing sound goes away once the brake is let up and a little accelerator is applied. It definitly does not happen in sst, reverse or D4.

I would appreciate it if you could eloborate on this portion of your statement.

"It may have already gotten the front pump bushing in the trans also."

Did you mean the failing torq convrtr?

When you apply the brake the dump valve in the trans opens and dumps the extra pressure causing the noise to go away. It's been a few years since I'
ve done that particular repair so it could be the torq convertor, pump or valve body but is definately trans pressure related. It is listed (I think) as a ssm(special service message) and only aurthorized techs can access and is not the same as tsb(technicle sevice bulliten) and is listed to the public. Sorry I couldn't be more help I'll try to have a better answer by tommorrow.

Thanks.

Do you think low fluid could cause this condition?

I just came back from another drive lots of stop and go; I did not notice any drivabilty issues. Upon my return home I stopped with the car in D5 and waited for the noise and it did not happen. I do believe I heard a faint cavitation sound but I was alone and could not get out to listen a little closer.

A fellow at flatratetech.com says it might be the dreaded moose howl of the IAC. I live in the south and am not familar with the moose howl and I have never had an IAC go bad and would like to know what you fine folks think.

I do not think that low fluid would do that because it only does it when there is pressure on the convertor. Are you sure it's coming from the trans? I have had to bend the rear exhaust hanger to keep the muffler from vibrating against the rear ground effect.

Pretty sure that is where ti is eminating from. I replaced my exhaust about 2 years ago and went through the old hangar problem as well. It was vibrating against the rear fascia. What a pain in the exhaust that was.

WORD!!! It is a pain to bend that hanger. The way to see if it is a IAC is that when it's doing it get someone to look under the hood with the plastic cover off and touch the IAC and see if it's vibrating. Beware it'll sound like it's coming from the mass airflow but it's not.

I'll give it a go later today. Thanks for imparting your wisdom.

I spent the better part of the day trying to get that booger to budge. It might have been easier with the exhaust unbolted but I didnt have jack stands then so i did it the hard way.
