I am thinking about buying a VR4 or a TT Stealth. Most of the ones that I find are sitting around 100k to 150k miles on them. What should I expect to go wrong with them in the near future? What kind of things should I be looking for? Also, and I know this is a subjective question, why should I choose one over the other?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

I got my VR4 with 138k miles on it. So far, the following things have gone wrong with it:
Water pump
Timing belt
Thermostat
Transmission (2nd gear sychro)
Those were the major things anyway. It now has about 155k on it. They are not easy cars to maintain sometimes. But very fun.

Boosted1, how much did it cost you when you repaired your 2nd gear synchro? Mine probably needs repairing too.... :(

While both cars are great cars. It's a matter of your own opinion. That's the best advice I can give you. I tend to say the 3kgt over the stealth because, well, IMO the 3kgt is the nicer car, exterior wise. Some may disagree but that's their opinion. Choose the one with ur kind of styling. Both look very similar so u can't go wrong with either. I think a stealth TT would be cheaper to had than a 3kgt TT.

Did the belt and pump fail or did you just need to replace them?

This is just me but I personally would only get a 95+ VR4 or 94-96 RT/TT. I see a lot more problems with 91-93 3k's but there are also more of those made.
Depending on how the car was treated, you could run into lots of problems. I've had mine over a year and had 1 problem. My intake manifold pressure sensor took a shit on me. It's not a big deal though. I've been running the car with the CEL on for 6 months now. I can use my datalogger and clear it whenever though.
100K+ miles is a lot but it all comes down on how the car was treated. If you are going to buy one of these cars, you MUST have money that you are willing to spend in order to fix the car. You are fooling yourself if you think you will have no problems.

You usually replace them because you can't afford to fix the engine if they fail... I had a dealer replace a belt and pump and they screwed up the belt tensioner and the timing belt broke on the highway.
Luckly it was covered by the dealership b/c they screwed up but it cost them $9000 (Cdn) to re-build the engine. (Although I wished it did more damage b/c if it was any more expensive they would have just bought a new engine)
