I bought a 1995 s-10 extended cab 4x4 for 1500 bucks as it had around 168k miles. when i start it up it runs fine and it actually drives fine but there is a loud ticking noise that seems to be coming from the passenger side manifold.i got most of it taken down and was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if i should just buy a new motor.

Exhaust manifold leaks can sound like that

Can you post a sound clip of this noise?

Can also be a collapsed hydraulic lifter, these are common on chevy engines with over 100,000 miles. Also, if it is just a small tick make sure it isn't your fuel injectors if you have the TBI. As already stated though, could also be an exaust manifold.

Also can be caused by a oil system that needs a flush.

Sludging lifters will cause this.

my dad just took a quick look over it and suggests its the balancing shaft so, hes gonna look at it some more and hopefully thats the problem.

I doubt it's the balance shaft, more than likely it's your distributor wearing out. The tend to click because the newer style uses a plastic shaft.

Try running some AutoRX and follow the instructions. If their instructions are a little too involved (they expect a lot of oil changes in the process) get some Marvel Mystery Oil. With this stuff drain a half a quart out of your oil system and replace it with Marvel for 500-800 miles. Dump all the oil and with the drain plug still out pour a half a quart of oil into you engine to get anything out of your oil pan. Then just refill with oil and don't forget to change your filter. When my lifter started to tick a little at startup this fixed it with no problems for the last 15,000 miles (I have 138500 miles on mine).

I would just try an engine flush treatment.

30 minutes of idling in the engine and it will clean it up.

AutoRX and Marvel are engine oil flush treatments. Marvel is more harsh and should only be run for a short time, like the 500 miles I said before, while AutoRX is ment for a longer flush time. Go to http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=5 there you will be able see what others think of different oil treatments, most really like AutoRX.

True, the AutoRX is liked over there, but the treatment takes close to 10,000 miles, is a LOT more expensive and does the same job that you can do in 30 minutes with a standard oil flush before you next oil change.

Flush, change the oil, and you are done in 45 minutes.

Thats exactly why I said to go with Marvel or something else if the AutoRX is too much time and money. They really do expect a lot of time don't they? Notice I used Marvel Mystery Oil, why do something that takes almost 10,00 miles on a truck with 138500 miles?

Exactly, it is just not reasonable.
