kit decals and clear coat?

Is it safe to put on the decals from a kit and then clear coat over them?

I'd say it depends more on the clear than the decal... Acrylics, enamels and urethanes seem to be the safest, lacquers the most likely to make a meal of the decals. You just have to test first if you're in doubt... - Mark

How is it to apply decals to a car with clear coat? Will they fall off? Or do they sit very well?

A "how-to" for searching.
The search button is the little gray sqaure at the top right corner of the thread list. it has the letters G. and O. on it. There is a field for you to type in the keywords to the left of that button. You should see the words "search this forum". Type and click and read away!

They should sit fine over paint with a clearcoat. If you have waxed the model, that is a different story..

I'm a newbie so take my words with a pinch of salt!

The only model I've built so far had acrylics and enamel paint on the body. I clear coated the whole car then put microsol on the area(s) I wanted to put the decals on and it all worked out fine. The sheen of the gloss coupled with the microsol made decal maneouvering on the body a relatively painless task. However, take care with the microsol because I put too much on the back bumper and ended up with a decal which folded in on itself!! The decal had to go in the bin and the other decals on the back had to be rearranged to make up for the missing decal!!

Actually it is about the decals as much as it is the clear coat. Decals are printed with enamel, lacquer, acrylic and UV cured inks. Depending on which inks were used is what make a decal react to a topcoat. You can test your decals by placing some striaght thinnner on an extra part of the decals sheet to see if there is a reaction before spraying your clear coat.
