Electrical connectors???

Okay, this is probably going to sound like a REALLY REALLY dumb question to you folk who know your cars inside and out as far as mechanics go. I have two wires that stick out from my alternator. Now, I know that they are the electrical connectors and I know they connect TO the alternator, but my question is where should they be connected FROM?

EDIT: After a little research and chatting in some rooms on Yahoo, someone suggested that these may need to be connected to my battery and starter, while another guy said they needed to be connected to my ignition. The battery makes sense because why have an alternator just sit and be pretty when it can be useful and CHARGE SOMETHING, like the battery perhaps? Anyways, just thought I'd point that out.

My other questions are what are the electrical connectors for exactly? What is it that they do? Are they necessary to charge the battery? Do they need to be connected? Am i better off not connecting them?

Thanks in advance for any answers anyone here can give me.

P.S. If anyone can tell me HOW to connect this little pretties, I'd be grateful too, as I'm stumped on where to put them.
