91 lumina z34 Brake warning light

What controls the brake warning light on the dashboard? If a E-Brake cable were broke ... would that cause the problem?? The E-Brake pedal is at the top, so the switch should be off in the mechanisim. What about the regular brake system? anything in there??

ok if the parking brake cable is broken, then the light will be on. there are sensors located at the rear wheels to tell whether or not the brake is applied. the warning light tells you that either the brake is applied, or that there is too much slack, thus a broken cable....
