Here is somethink from the '93 transport manual: engine is mostly similar so this might give some useful indication, but not about the surroundings.....

I'd be most surprized that this pulley/balancer has degraded in a way it makes the car vibrate.....I'm almost sure the '88 3800 is of the "uneven firing" type and this creates a kind of vibration different from the "even firing" 3800 (L27) that I have and athat you have almost certainly in your '92.
However, it would be fun to have an "audio stream" of your vibration...we could build a sound catalog of noises on this forum...
just for fun listen to this one (starting my KIA)

the noise is similiar to a water pump rattling.the motor is a c
so i presume you are saying that you dont believe its the crankshaft pulley. Then it must be coming from the power steering pump.
the noise dont bother me.
the rough idling and shaking does it in idle. worse in drive then park. the first 3 blocks when cold not too much.after that the trouble begins.
when the car is going no problem just slight whirr as it accelerates from 0 to 20 km per hour approx.
the belt was probably never changed.
give me rough indication what can cause these problems.
maybe its a egr problem.
this egr valve looks different.
i have no service manual.
my 92 bonneville has 250000 km on it. the body is terrible.
im scared to drive it. the police might stop me and send me for inspection.
it will not pass.
my hope is on this 88. the body looks brand new.
135000 km original
can a defective power steering box cause a car to shake. the belts are all linked together
thanks buddy

It looks that you describe more that one problem:
there is a "slight whirr" which could be the power steering pump....it would not be uncommon...and if that, I would not care if the P/S operation is correct..and they can "whirr" for a very long time.. but if it develops into "rattling", ???? I would investigate the water pump too...worn out bearings develop a lot of noise but eventually, it will leak coolant. I heard that removing the water pump is somewhat tricky....Id wait and see..for positive identification..
then there is "rough idling and shaking"...which without any other clue, can be linked to several factors, including the EGR, that is a common problem too...
....In any case, be it power steering pump, water pump, or EGR, changing them later is same price as changing them to-day if the can runs fine and you evaluate the risk of the problems to worsen and let you stranded in the middle of nowhere..as a low risk...
For myself, caught with same problem , if I could't have a positive clue , I'd wait and see for the real culprit to show......
I'd like to hear it........

the crankshaft pulley was fixed.
also the evaporator core was blocked.
clr was sprayed in the hole with compressed air.
allowed to sit for for 5 minutes approx.
then a combination of hot water and compressed air was sprayed into the vicinity.75 percent was cleaned. to clean completely heater core has to be removed.
it took the mechanic about 40 minutes.
degreaser was not used because a stong smell would remain.
it is no 5 minute job.
