pulley problem

I have a good whistling noise going on on one of the pulleys. It's not the supercharger pulleys or belt, it's the pulley on my surpentine (alternator)directly behind the pulley that extends off the SC snout. It's the top one. I sprayed it with a little Slick 50 and it quits for a while but eventually starts again. The mechanic said it looks OK, it just might be from the cold, damp weather we have during the winter. The belts are all new also. I drive like 40 miles a day to work and I don't want this to lead to any big time trouble when it's been like 10 below wind chill lately. I appreciate any suggestions.

Sounds like your talking bout the accessory belt tensioner. $20 at a parts store and 15 min replacing it should take care of it.

Would that be called Factory air idler pulley? Auto zone has this part.

I was wrong. The noise was coming from the alternator "pulley". I had someone look at it and they said all the bearings are inside and it just sounded like the belt needed a little dressing on it. He said most likely it was the weather cause the belt and pulleys looked good. None of the pulleys were bouncing or anything.

The noise was coming from the alternator "pulley".

Good luck, lets hope it not another failing GM alternator. That is one of the first signs of them starting to go out.Keep an eye out for the battery light on the dash coming on,because after that you wount be able to drive the car very far.Seen it happen to many times on our cars or other GMs .

The noise seems to be coming from that area. When it started today we sprayed belt dressing directly on the belt farther down so we didnt spray it near that pulley and it stopped. Would there be any other signs or sounds that would let me know the alternator is going bad or would it just happen?
