325is auto to manual

I understand it's possible to swap an auto trans for manual trans. Is this process expensive? is it recommended?
I want to buy a red 1988 325is, but it's an auto. I currently have a 1988 325i stick, but not in very good condition.
any advice is greatly appreciated.

would you recommend just leaving the automatic as is? Or should I just hold out for a 5 speed?
I'm partial to a 5 speed.
