I have a 91 aerostar, 3.0, 199,000 miles.
Was acting up terrably (jumping around when stepping on gas pedal, bad idle) Did a complete tune up (spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, new pcv valve) air filter is good. It didnt make a diffrence, the more it got drove the worse it got, Now today it had no speed, we were able to get it to 45 mph then started dropping till it was barely moving and would stall out. Let it sit for 10 minutes then was able to go 1-2 miles before having to pull over again. What can be causing this?? Also its going thru alot of gas. And the engine was racing and not wanting to shift.
Please help us ... we have 4 kids and really need our van working.
Also no codes in computer.
TIA

I am not amy expert on cars, or aerostars but maybe my 2 cents worth will trigger other posters. Our 94 saturn was running rough, choking at higher speeds, and beginning to not shift (spinning without shifting). and less power. A few episodes we just crawled at 10 mph, after parking with engine off, we could restart and drive again. Finally the car wasn't shifting and died with a loud horrible klunk as we drove it in low gear to the trans shop. They found we had a bad alternator. They said transmission etc can't work with bad alternator. Replacing the alternator fixed it. So it couldn't hurt to check your alternator. Trans people said the bad alternator was not healthy for the trans either. Good luck.

p.s. we had a problem a few years ago where the engine ran hot, oil was dirty, car ran ok until 45 mph, where it would choke and run rough. Replaced ERG valve. No change. I heard car guys on radio suggest checking out the exhaust back pressure if erg wasnt the problem. That gave me idea maybe my catalytic converter was clogged. Found out our model was rated for 70,000 miles. We put in new catalytic converter, and problem went away engine ran cooler, and oil was not longer black tar. But that problem did not involve transmission)
