dies when started up in cold

when i start my vr4 when its cold out it dies, it doesn't idle. i have to keep my foot on the accelerator at around 2000rpm to get it warmed up otherwise it just dies. i do this for 2 minutes until the temp gauge reaches about half then i can let my foot off the gas. do i need a new idle thingy?
