Hello

my neighbor gave me this vehicle. Here is what it does. When I start it, it will not go into reverse until the engine has warmed up. Once the car has reached operating temp, all I need to do is put it into reverse and give it a little gas and it will go right into gear and it wont be a problem. When the motor is cold - it will not go into reverse.

Also when I am driving it - it will shift gears when in drive with no problems. But what I notice is when I take my foot off the gas while the car is moving and coast for a moment, when I go to give it gas again, it feels like it is nuetral for a moment(because it will rev but not push forward) and then it is almost as if it will just "slide" back into gear. Like it slips out and slides back in. When it goes back into gear, there is no jerking of the vehicle. You get a rev for a moment and then keep moving.

I have changed the filter and fluid since I just got it and that never can hurt but it did nothing.

Anyone have any ideas. I am not about to put a ton of money into an extra car I got for nothing but everything else is in great shape for the age and so would like to salavage it if possible.

Thanks for reading my lengthy post but I wanted to give as much info as possible.

When you changed the fluid and filter, did you use Mopar ATF+3 fluid?

CHanged the fluid and filter 4 days ago. Only drove it for like 1/4 mile afterwards though. I did not want to risk causing any further problems if this was something fixable. and yes it was ATF+3 Now is using the opar brand that important or is castrol AFT+3 just fine?

I have been told that other brands claim to be ATF+3, but don't have the same properties as Mopar ATF+3 when tested. I always use the Mopar one myself, transmission repairs are too costly for me to worry about saving the couple of bucks by buying non-mopar.

I am experiencing a similar problem and would like to know if you have found a solution. In another forum(I forget which) someone had the same problem and changed the fluid and filter, but the problem remained. They said they put some Duralube Automatic Transmission conditioner into the beast and lo and behold their problem went away and did not return. Probably worth a try if you are contemplating a new tranny. Let us know if you find a fix.

more than likely your trans has hard seals on the pistons thats why it wont shift when its cold.

Seals, I had the same problem I used Lucas tansmission additive which was real thick and it took care of the problem.
