87 Civic overheating problems

I'm currently driving a 87 civic with carb. I'm pretty sure the car gives false heat readings because it says i'm running in the red when the heater isnt even that hot. I also noticed some strange noise today it sounded like bubbles somewhere around my battery. The noise was also noticable inside the car and with the hood open. So my guess was that its a hose, my batt, or the radiator. If you know anything that could help me please reply.

you don't have any or at least very much coolant in the car. Check the coolant level first then since you got it hot. I'd do a compression check on all of the cylinders and make sure they are pretty close to each other.

lxndr is right. with my old motor i was losing coolant from a bad head gasket and when it was really low the engine would be super hot but the heater wouldn't put out any heat. basically there isn't enough coolant to reach the heater hose.
