1999 For Ranger Auto Trans Problems Help

My automatic transmission jerks into gear and revs especially at lower
gears and my abs light is on. It seems this probablem stated when the abs light went on. Does anyone have a cure?

I work on first-gen Rangers, so really I don't have a very good idea of what's wrong. I would look into other people having problems with the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). It seems like the ABS would use the VSS to determine what it needs to do. I imagine the tranny has all sorts of electronic gadets, which could be using the VSS to help determine when to shift. Is your speedo doing anything weird?

My 99 ranger is doing EXACTELY the same thing. I am changing out the VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor) on the rear differential this weekend.

There is alot of info about it on the web, seems to be a Common Ranger Problem.

cost me $17.04 on-line at www.parts.com for the part, and doing it myself.

What mine is doing is ABS light is always on, Speedometer doesn't work until 20-28 mph, and the auto trans goes THUNK/Hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear and from 2nd to 1st.
