Oops wrong gear

Yes this is a Ford connecting rod but I wanted to show the newb's what happens when you down shift into the wrong gear. I've been working part time at a race shop that builds, maintains, & supports a fleet of SRF's (Spec Ford Racer) and I was told to take apart this engine with a hole in the oil pan and all types of bad stuff was found. Golf ball sized chunks of metal in the oil pan, 4 bent rods, cracked pistons, etc, etc. The engine are completly stock Ford 4 bangers.
Basically the owner downshifted from 5th to 1st on accident, meant to hit 3rd but missed. OOPS :grinyes:
Here's a perfect example of why you shouldn't drive your basically "stock" car like a race car.

And yes it does happen to Honda's, I saw nearly the same results while I worked at Honda but it was usually S2000's with an idiot driver. One customer went through 3 engines in the time I was there. :disappoin Instead of spending all that money for new engines he could have learned how to drive very well at a racing school but some people insist on learning the hard way.
If you feel you need to downshift learn the technique in a junk car before you toast your engine. No rev-limiter out there will stop an engine from over revving on an incorrect downshift, the only thing that can stop it is a skilled driver jamming the clutch in as fast as possible or pulling it out of gear.

lol, funny.. most people should just stick to autotragics, or not drive at all. it's the opposite for me, I can't drive an automatic.. I keep on wanting to shift it, wind up in neutral, or I accidentally leave the tranny in 3rd, and end up on the higway saying "why's the rev meter going so high?".

We had a RSX in the shop the other day who downshifted and overrevved the engine. Get this, the number 4 piston was smashed b/t the counterweights on the crankshaft. The rod was in bits and pieces.
