Heater problem..96 Ranger

I've got a 96 Ranger with a heater problem, here's the situation: Early last year I noticed I wasn't getting much heat from the heater, especially when I'd stop for more than a few seconds. I changed the thermostat (180 degree) and that seemed to solve the problem. About a month ago I noticed that I wasn't getting any heat and it was blowing cool air again, so I took it into a local garage, where they proceeded to replace the fan coil, AND the thermostat with a different one (they said the 180 degree one wasn't right) The thing seemed O.K. but when it blew cool air at stops again, I called them. Seems its because of lower compression (lots of miles on the engine) I've never heard of this, I don't recall ever having a vehicle do this before, my 87 ranger has a lot more miles on it and doesn't do this. Oh!, and coolant levels have always been good. Anybody have any ideas about this? :uhoh:

I had a similar problem with a 96 not too long ago. Except I would get nothing but cool air all the time. A pin on the motor that swings the blend door broke. Had to replace the heater case. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I sure hope this isn't the problem. As I said, I do get hot air when I'm moving down the road, but if it is something like this, it sounds real time consuming, and something I'll have to do when it gets warm again.

In your case I'd check the thermostat (cheapest to fix of possible problems) I'd also check for any blockages I.E. leaves, mouse nests etc. in the heater box (I've had this problem with my 87 Ranger) If all that checks out O.K. Id be thinking about the possibility of a problem with the damper door $$$ if you have to have a dealer fix it. Good Luck...Roadbum
