SES Light coming on

ok guys & gals I am doing this for a buddy of mine who is ready to jum off of a bridge. The car is a 1996 Ford Taurus GL, 3.0 V6. He has replaced the EGR valve. He had a parts store run a scan for him and it came back with a code PO41 which he tells me is EGR flow low.

I had asked him if he erased the codes from the computer and his reply was, the guy at the parts store used the hand held scanner to erase the codes. Now I do not know if this actually erase's the previously stored codes from the computer or not. At any rate this is a "NEW" egr valve that he has in there and he is getting this code. He cannot figure out why the SES light keeps coming on. Any help for my poor buddy would be greatly appreciated.

Insufficient EGR flow doesn't necessarily mean that the valve itself is faulty. There are two more items in the chain besides the EGR valve, one is the EGR solenoid, and the other is a backpressure sensor. The backpressure sensor is in fact the most likely culprit, they seem to fail the most often. Until that is replaced the OBD sensor (engine) light will come back almost immediately after erasure of the code.

Do you know where the EGR solenoid might be located at or the back pressure sensor.....I know what I already told him. Get a chiltons manual, lol

On the Vulcan engine of that year the exhaust backpressure sensor is a rectagular shaped gizmo just next to the left (standing in front of the car) of the EGR valve at the back/top of the intake manifold, bolted to it. The vacuum solenoid is about 5-6 inches to the right of the passenger side strut tower, I think a rubber vacuum hose is between the top of the EGR valve and the solenoid.
