I have a 2000 s-10 2.2 4cyl. It has 86000 miles on it and its makeing some lifter noise. Is there anything i can do to make this less noticeable? It also makes this loud fan noise. It used to do this only in the summer when it was really hot but now it does it all the time. My motor is not overheating. Temp is normal...

Oil level is good. Did an oil change and added a bottle of lucas. That didnt do anything. It makes a hissing/grinding noise when i get into higher rpm's. Im thinking about taking it to a mechanic but does anyone have any other solutions?

well how retarted or advanced is the timeing? and i still say for some reason that theres not enough oil up at the lifters, but if the dip stic is full then there is, the only real thing that i can think of is bad lifters or timeing being off

DROP YOU OIL NOW!
Lucas crap causes oil foaming which will stop proper lubrication from happening.
Drop the oil and use nothing but a non fram filter and Castrol GTX 5w30.
What oil and filter are you using now?

lucas is fine, IF YOU USE THE RECCOMENDED MIXTURE AND NOT A DROP MORE, useing more is what causes the air-ating, if you used more then about half a pint in your oil you will bubble, otherwise it doesnt harm a thing, in fact my rear end use to lock up, i used a bottle of advanced auto rear end gear oil, and a half a bottle of lucas and i havnt had a problem sence, and ive used it in several trannies to stop slippage, and as long as you use it in small quantities it is fine

Hehe, I was just trying to let you know about this stuff.
It no good to any engine.
A lot of people promoting Lucas don't know about this and blindly recommend it to people.
The product preys upon the ignorant, and you my friend like me are no longer ignorant, we know the facts through actual testing. :D

Yeah i put lucas in it a couple weeks ago. No difference at all. It was a waste of money. It says on the bottle that it will stop noisey lifters but i think its bs. Im thinking about doing a flush before i spend money to take it to the shop.

Just for everyone's information again, here is the Flush guide I gace to atomicpulse.
Do this before you switch to synthetic.
Ok, you are going to have to do an engine flush.
You do this just before you change your oil.
Ok, ready?
Go buy your oil and two oil filters. Yes, two.
Buy one good one, and one crappy fram filter.
Buy a bottle of engine flush. Degunk or pennzoil will do, buy the one with the most volume. 1 quart is close to the size.
Ok, ready to do the flush and the oil change?
DON'T REMOVE THE OIL, LEAVE THE OIL PAN PLUG IN!
Ok, remove your oil filter ONLY, discard and put on the cheap fram oil filter. You will have lost maybe a quart of oil in doing this. This is good.
Pour the bottle of engine flush into the oil fill tube, put the cap back on the oil fill tube and start up the engine and IDLE it for 30 minutes.
I AM COMPLETELY SERIOUS ABOUT THE IDLE THING! DO NOT BE AN IDIOTIC AND IMPATIENT MORON AND REV THE ENGINE WITH THE FLUSH IN THE OIL. THE FLUSH IS MEANT TO THIN THE OIL AND IT DISSOLVES THE ENGINE OIL SLUDGE ALL IN YOUR ENGINE.
IF YOU DO, YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR ENGINE AND DON'T COME WHINING BACK AT ME BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.
The new filter is there to catch the amazing amount of crap the engine flush will dissolve and remove it from the oil. After 30 minutes has past, shut down the engine, remove and discard the crap oil filter.
Remove the oil pan plug and allow the engine oil to drain. Leave the filter off and the plug out for 30 minutes so all the conventional oil is allowed to drain. Don't rush this job, DO IT RIGHT! Hell, while it is draining, go around and lube the hinges on your truck or maybe lube the front end a bit.
Ok, after 30 minutes has past, install the good quality oil filter (AC Delco/K&N/WIX/Mobil1) and fill up your oil. DON'T OVERFILL! Also, check your oil level on even ground.
There you go, you have internally cleaned most of the conventioanl sludge out of your engine and have replaced your oil with synthetics.
You are now good for 8000miles of driving when you replace the oil filter at 4000 miles and top the engine oil up with what you lost changing the filter.
Happy driving!

Does it really matter what brand of engine flush i get? I see all kinds of stuff: marvel mystery oil, sea foam, degunk, etc.

change the oil, and put a product called sea foam in it, i love the stuff, and blazerlt hasnt found an anti artical on that one yet ;), its great for stickey lifters and it is excellent as a gas treatment in the winter time, its a little mroe then the heet crap out there, but it does a much better job and lasts a lot longer, i use half a bottle per 18 gallon tank, and i only put it in every other fillup, so i get 4 tanks out of one 4 us dollers, or like you, i use it in my oil to keep everything freely flowing

The lifter noise was actually louder after i put the lucas in there. That was a wasted oil change. Im gonna do the flush tonight and stay away from the lucas and see what happens.

Actually, seafoam treatments should not be done that frequently.
Maybe a small treatment every 6 months.
Over doing additives like you are doing can and will cause plug fouling and deposits.

Actually bro, you don't need to treat it the whole winter.
Over doing the additive aolvents can lead to injector failure and o-ring degradation. As I said, only do it maybe one every 6 months or maybe ever once in ever 3 months.
Trust me on this, I used to use cleaners almost every tank or two and when I chanecked my plugs when I replaced them, a LOT of them had thick whitish brown deposits around the electrodes.
There are cleaners already in the fuel.

Actually, your fuels I think are better than ours.
We get the crappy winter gas with ethanol.
Just remember the golden rule of any automotive additives.
Less is more.

less is more is the charmen ultra commertial, and our fuel is based around emissions then how good it is, kind of sucks, not much of a noticable difference from detroit to the other end of the tunnel though

less is more is a new slogan used down here, and the fuel here is made nice for the enviornment not nice for the vehicals, but when i go into canida i dont notice a difference in preformence from canadian to american gas.. and no im not drunk, its a school night lol

Well i did the flush last night and followed your instructions exactly blazerLT. I still have a lifter knock but its better. It accelerates like it did when it was new and the grinding/hissing noise at high rpm's is not as noticable. I drove it for about 20 min and that noise went away. After i drove it for a while i put in some oil addative and that helped a little bit more. Hopefully the lifters will quiet down enough so i can sell it. Do you think if i drive it around some more maybe that would help? Thanks....

my guess is since it used to be only in very hot weather, which means thinner oil from higher temps, it needed either more oil, more oil pressure, thicker oil, better filter or all the above. i think mine had slight lifter noise yrs back ... haven't noticed it since switching from regular oil to full synthetic oil... 5w30 winter ... 10w30 summer.

No need to change oil weights seeing they are all 30 weights at engine temperature.
Stick to 5w30 all year round so your top end gets protection faster.

Thanks for the info. But what do we do if we've already had it in our engine for 2500 miles. is a normal oil change enough? That page blows my mind, and im kinda mad at myself for getting sucked in. again, thanks BlazerLT. Also, call me stupid, but im not sure what the best kind of oil is. Im days away from doing your flush, and i already bought a gallon of Castrol GTX 75,000 mile 10w-30. Is that any good?

Well, change it as soon as you can.
And yes, that is good oil but I recommend 5w30 for our engines for proper lubrication on startup.

Blazer, please take bob's demonstration with a grain of truth. The demonstration is a good one but leaves out the real world. I have been running Lucas for a long time in my racecars, 4X4 truck, and triumph motorcycle (top end lubrication for the bike) and they work well. Will they fix a mechanical problem with a truck like an out of adjustment lifter… no. But they do help with the lubrication. Now is the time to jump up and down and say what about bob’s great example of foaming. I read that article and got very nervous the last thing I wanted was to have a rear end lock up at 180 MPH on a racetrack. When I went out to the forums that he points out I found a guy that had a see trough cover on his differential. So I bought one for the transam. I then clamped it down to the dyno and started a simulation of a 100-mile race. Going from speeds of 40 all the way up to 180 and back down again to simulate turns and straights. The delco oil that bob used worked very well at the end of 100 miles it was at a temperature of 150 degrees f. and had pretty much “sprayed” all over the gears. I then emptied the case and cleaned it then replaced it with delco mixed with Lucas just as bob did. Then we ran the same simulation. It climbed up the gears at first then it foamed up and flew up the gears and flew all over the differential. After about 10 miles it stopped foaming and just covered the whole inside at the 40 mile point it was actually dripping off the top of the differential walls and falling right on the gears. I can honestly say that there was not a centimeter of gear, case, or cover that was not just covered in oil unlike the pure delco that just ran up the gears and back down to the case bottom. By the end of the 100 mile run the oil was a golden color just like it is in the bottle with very little to no air entrapped. At the end of the run the oil temperature was 125 degrees what does this mean to you it means less of the energy of the gears when into heating up the oil and more when into moving you vehicle. Less heat means less gear wear.

After this test and a 100-mile test ran on my truck doing the same things but going from 0-50 and back down to simulate town driving and highway driving. I plan on running Lucas oils in all my vehicles just as I always have. By the way my truck has always run Lucas along with mobile one full synthetic. It has 325,000 miles is still on the first engine and the engines compression has only dropped 1-3 psi in any cylinder.
Just my two cents worth.
Say what you want, it causes foaming in all its' applications. The proof is right there and you are choosing to deny it out of ignorance.
Use it if you want, but you are NOT going to change my impressions on it nor my belief in discouraging it. These are not opinions, there is actual truth to this.

Blazer as an engineer I have always been told do not believe everything you read about every test somebody does. Instead do the test yourself and make you own conclusions. It is always best to test an item in an environment that is closest to the real thing. A little plastic box with very large gear clearances between plastic gears. Ran by an electric motor, at room temperatures. How is that an opinion it is a real world test. Using a real car on real components. You do know what a dyno is right. It is the closest thing you are going to get to running it down the road. Not some plastic test set up.
The only ignorance here is someone that would believe a small plastic jig you find in automotive display tables is a true test as opposed to a real car running real components at real speeds.

rerun the test, and take pictures/vidieo, please, then we have visual to compair it to, im not flameing or calling bs, but blazerlt has stated his case and proof, it is now your turn to do the same, its like when you go to court, the da has to prove the burdon of proof, not the innocent

you will have to wait a month (the car is on its way to las vegas) but I can do that next time we set it up. we run (on the dyno) the car using the acceleraton/deceleration curves for each track that we run so I will have to do the same run next month to get it ready for LA it is easy to add the clear cover then and run it.

I think the dyno test would prove the actual results of the lucas products more efficiantly. You gotta think about it though. The lab test made by bob could be compared to testing shampoo on a rat. You will never know exactly if the shampoo is good unless you test it in the real world on a human. I would like to see a test on a vehicle before i make a decision on lucas products. The gears in the little box cant be compared to a motor or rear end. But you never know...

It doesn't matter, the oil was perfectly fine and you see the results when the Lucas is added to it.
They use the gear thing in the promotional things in the stores, and now it isn't right?

Yeah i think im in the middle of the road on the lucas issue. I tried out the lucas for my lifter knock because it said it will quiet down noisy lifters. It didnt really do a damn thing so i dont know if it works or not. I think my truck just needed a lifter job but i dont have to worry about that because i traded it in :). The dealer didnt even test drive my truck so i was lucky.... My little brother put some lucas in his 63 chevy truck and it stopped the smoking problem it had. I also think those gear demo things with the lucas in it is a bad example. It just makes me think, well damn if i ever put some lucas in an erector set ill be in good shape.

Not really, it is just the fact that people are so brainwashed by this crap that they won't even believe that it is crap when they have photos and tests right in front of them.
You could satisfy and prove everything to them and they will find some kind of excuse that the tests are wrong blah blah blah....

Well all this Lucas bashing and I just so happened to put some in the wife's Cavalier awhile ago.The Cavy holds about 5 quarts(because I put a oil filter relocation kit on it).So I use 4 1/2 quarts of oil in it and a 1/2 quart of Lucas in it.Now I just changed the oil and started it up and left it warm up and then drained the oil.Guess what?NO AIR BUBBLES or FOAMING.The oil had about 3300 miles on it so it wasn't so black that I couldn't see.Somebody explain this.I watched the video of that Bob guy and looked at the tranny pic.Now why did that happen on their tests and it didn't happen to me.
