93 Explorer 4WD busted

I have a 1993 Ford Explorer (Eddie Bauer).
Since I've had it the 4 wheel drive hasn't worked. A few times the little red light next to "Low Range" lit up out of the blue, but other than that - nothing. One mechanic looked behind the dash switch for a loose wire, but found none.
I know I can have it tested, but I'm hoping someone else may have (unfortunatly) been in my shoes.
Can anyone tell me what could be wrong? Fuse, wires, switch, huge expensive mechanical parts I can't afford....anything before I get ripped off by some mechanic?

The transfer case on the electric AWD does have wires going to it, depending on where you live, you may have sheared it by running over something that kicked up under the truck by the TC. Let me know what you find?
