I went to my performance shop the other day to order an underdrive pulley. It turns out, the only one he can get is the Unorthidox pulley, costing me $215. No way in hell! Is there othe companies that make them? Where can I find them? Thanks

yeah theres others that make them. i think aem has em.. but dont expect to pay less than that. obx has some that iv seen go on ebay for 100 or less. just look around.. and search ebay. even if you dont want to buy off there sometimes its a good way to see if they make a certain part for you car. try some of the vendors listed in the faq sticky thread in this forum. they should have something for ya too. peace

215 is actually a good price and unorthodox racing is the best brand for pullies so id do it if i were you

a underdrive pulley decreases power applied to the accesories (power steering, a/c, ect) and also lightens the rotating mass. although im not sure how much you will gain, i would imagine it wouldnt be much more than 5hp

ok, i confess, that was just a guess. BUTi remember reading somewhere that people have seen up to 16 whp on turbo cars from underdrive pullies so an educated guess

If you realy want an underdrive pully. You better get a light weight flywheel or you will through off your (horemoniuc balence) (cant sp). the under drive pully is alot lighter then the stock one. I here they give you pretty good power but you need a flywheel first.:nono:

what is that h balance thingy?

its been proven (somewhere) that you can gain 2whp for every pound lighter than the stock. So if the old one is 10lbs, and the new one is 2lbs, then you supposedly gain 16whp. or 18whp? i cant do math, but thats WAY TOO MUCH! Probably no more than 10whp

David-b, look at the AFX underdrive pullies, I believe they are $150

Assuming you are referring to the harmonic balancer replacement--and you are non-turbo (420a) I would suggest buying the AF/x pulley. Unorthodox is not necessarily the best one out there.

And you do NOT have to have a lightened flywheel to run a lightened/underdrive pulley. There are people running with underdrive pulleys and no aftermarket flywheels for 2+ years with no damage to rotating assembly.

EDIT: For a non-turbo setup, the underdrive crank pulley is one of the best bolt-on bang-for-the-buck mods you can do.

And do not buy OBX.

I just about bought an underdrive pulley. However I learned that it will cause (as somewhat said above) other things to operate more poorly. A big thing for me is the alternator will have to work much harder to do the same thing. This is big because I like my stereo and that could cause issues. I am not sure if that is what you are conerned about, but just one more thing to look at.

How can that be so? The engine is still running the parts (alternator) just as much, right?

So, I went and bought a Bomz pulley. 1.6lbs, no belt. I think Im going to try to install it myself. I cant seem to find my Haynes manual... does anyone know how many lbs/torque it needs to be put on? Also, can I cause any damage by installing it myself? I've never worked on the bottom end b4.

And I dont know what my performance guy was talking about... I can find these things all over the place. I think he was lost or something.
