vin #

I am looking at buying a 1971 Chevy, but I'm not sure if it is a malibu, chevelle or SS. The vin# is 136371r142286, can anyone out there help me.

1 Chevrolet
36 Malibu V8
37 2 door hardtop
1 1971
R Arlington Tx assembly

You might want to read further down in the posts about vin numbers.
After 1968 Chev did not have a code in the vin to identify SS.

Thanks Cruzn69. I have another question, If I put a SS package on it, does consist of just a chrome package and is it then a clone?

What would a restored 1971 Malibu be worth, price range etc., with a SS package and without. What are the differences?

The best way to find out what a car is worth?
Go to Collector car trader and do the following:
Type in the same year in both boxes
Choose car manufacturer
Type in the model.
Do not fill out any thing else. This will let the computer search the whole data base for the country.
After the search is complete, at the top of the search it will ask you to choose "asending or decending" Choos"decending". This will put the cars in price order. Most expensive first.
