coilovers

I was wondering if i bought coilovers for my 99 cavy if I would need new shocks or if I could just use the springs or what should I do. What would be best, for a reasonable price?

I would recomend getting new struts that are meant for lowering. I would really recomend a ground control and koni red combo. Just dont get cheap ebay or dropzone coils

^^ Good info.. Basically it works like this. If you mount any aftermarket spring or coilover on a stock OEM strut or replacement that has a drop below 1.5" they will blow in a matter of time. KYB's struts are under warrenty uptill a drop of 1.5". You can buy coilover buy do not go past that and yes they have ways to test them and find out if they were rode on at that level. Also another thing to consider is the optimum level of peformance is obtained is when the A-arm is parrel to the ground which occurs at 1.4" lower on a j-body. Eibach has a line of springs called the pro-kit which the drop is 1.4 " .. But if you want coil over i must suggest you get either the Prostreet or Ground Control

Ive got the bilstein full coilover and I would really recomend those or the rksport prostreet if you want to spend the money. I think its the best you can buy right now. I think tein just released their coilover for the jbody

crj, are you saying that as long as you don't drop more than 1.5", you can stick with the factory struts?

you can but its not a good idea. Over time you will wear them out.

ya, gm struts are notorious for going out in normal ride heights... definitely get aftermarket

coil overs are a really high spring rate. So thus you want a strut that has a higher valving so when the spring snaps back there is enough force wanting to go both different ways it makes the ride feel smooth. Best struts out there for coil overs are KONI or Tein D-spec or if you get a combo of like ground control and koni, or w/e

struts and shock are 'dampers' basically the 'dampen' the springs movement and if you lower the car the spring rate will always increase and the dampers will have to follow suit or your dampers wont work efectivel resulting in a dangerously bouncy ride! Defeintley do the strus and the strut mounts idealy as they'll be under more stress from a the higher spring rate 'shocking' them!
