how reliable are Geos?

Geos are cheap, are they reliable?

They're as reliable as you make them. If you get one that has been abused, not taken care of, and skimped out on regular fluid flushes, you might be looking at a new engine in the near future($300+ a day's work, n obig deal). But if you find a good maintained one with less than 100k, you'll have no problems. Besides general maintenence. Sometimes sensors go bad, but no worse than any other car, but there's less sensors.

The only really bad things regarding some Geo's is... its owner :tongue:

I have a 2000 metro with 123,000 miles on it.

These cars are really good at one thing.

BASIC TRANSPORTATION. best bet is the hatch back cause i have hauled love seats and such with both of my metros.

Easy and fairly inexpesnive to maintain. if you buy the good tires,,,you'll get way beyond the tread warranty usually.

Ex. i bought 60,000 mile tires. I got nearly 75,000 miles out of them and they still were good in the middle but the edges were fraying and the nail holes were picking up.

I drive 1000 miles a week for work. the car DOES fine.

change the oil, change the antifreeze and the tranny fluids, and basic maintenance and youre good.

THIS car does NOT eat brakes.

Had mine for years and I put a new tranny in and crank and cam seals,other than that the basic fluid changes.

If you live where a lot of salt is used they seem to rust faster than some. But in saying that, I have a '94 with 330K and its still going strong. They can be cold in sub-zero temps, however. When mounted with good snow tires they do quite well in the snow. They have their quirks (as you will read in this forum), but I love 'em.

:lol: I don't think they go all that fast compared to sport cars you see on the road.

As the place where I take my 96 for oil changes says. 80% of the metro's they see are holding up great. The other 20% are either lemons or owned by idiots.

I have a 94 1.0l and just turned over 200k ,and at 140k I ate a valve. had the head done and put rings in it,and I have taken it from northwest Ark. to the western slope of the rockies and back 6 times since rebuild and then to destin Fl. All these trips are around 1000 miles and have had no mech. problems. I consider this car ,for what it is ,to be the best car I have owned as far as reliability.

The nice thing about Geos are they are so much lighter than Dodges. That way when your pushing it up the hill to your house its not so hard to push.

interesting... Ok I was just wondering.

I've been through a few of these..my biggest problems have been the 5 spd trans eating the output shaft bearings.(change the fluid & spend the money for the synthetic gear lube) & the lower ball joints (which, to replace, you have to pop for lower control arms). I don't know what to do about this, you can't grease them. The 3 bangers seem to run forever..I use the "blended" synthetic/petroleum oil & change it at appx 5000 miles (all highway...change more often in the city) Hope this helps

Depends on how you define reliability. I'm mostly retired but do work occasionally at my old job which is a 1-1/2 hour drive each way. I take the little Metro because it gets around 42mpg. Not bad for a '93 with 316K miles.
