Have problem with 2000 Durango 5.9L. Starts, but unless I keep gas pedal depressed, engine stops. I just replaced the battery because the last one was dead and 5 years old. I have talked to everybody that I can think of that knows anything about a car but no luck.

Idle air control valve dirty or bad.

Throttle position sensor defective.

Do you have auto start?? If you do it could be that.. check the wires and make sure all door pins are closed/down.

I had a similar problem and thought that the 'hard start' was due to several start attempts by my wife without keeping the car running. I replaced the Idle Air Control (IAC) motor and jumped the car. I drove it around awhile to charge the battery and all seemed well. A few hours later it started hard and still wouldn't idle. I got it started, took it down to have the battery tested. Turns out the battery was bad. Works great after a new battery. Anyone know why a bad battery exhibits these symptoms?
