Have problem with 2000 Durango 5.9L. Starts, but unless I keep gas pedal depressed, engine stops. I just replace the battery cause the last one was dead and 5 years old.

I have a 2000 Durango SLT+ with the 5.9L engine. I went to the store, came out and it started, but would not stay running unless I kept my foot on the gas. As soon as I took my foot off the gas pedal, the engine just quit. It does seem to not turn over (start) as quickly as it used to, but it does turn over, and then it dies if I remove my foot from the gas. There are no warning lights, it seems to run fine when I keep my foot on the gas pedal.

Any ideas anyone? Did you get your's repaired? What was the problem? Thanks for any and all help.

Cheers,

Al

I had the same problem, which only happened once, but was a big concern because we take the vehicle on many long trips. We were also having an idle problem with the idle excelerating to over 1,500 and then back down while in park, or feeling a hesitation while driving. I had looked on this forum and got the idea for replacing the Idle Positioning Sensor. Actually had to talk the dealer into replacing it since it wasn't registering on the computer as a problem. It's been running great since.
