first things first ... if it's auto why are you down shifting ?
now as for the noise how does it sound, is it a lound knocking sound or a ticking sound ?
the dip stick is put in to the block at the bottom just before the oil pan it should jus push in but make sure to clean around the hole before you push it in to make sure that no dirt off the block gets put in to your oil.

the owners manual suggests you downshift when descending a hill, to prevent unneeded brake wear/fade. there was a red light at the bottom of the hill.
it starts off as a loud ticking, then as it warms it it becomes a loud CLACKITY-CLACKITY and it kinda hesitates, almost like i lost a cylinder.

Over revved engine and something broke in the engine. No where in any manual does it say to downshift into first gear at 50 mph.
Find the manual and read about engine overhauling.

haha i tried to downshift to 2nd, it went too far. my pops said its definitely a thrown rod, and i probably destroyed a cylinder. not a big deal, as i was going to tear it down soon anyway and start the great swap
