cost of wheel bearing replacement

Can anyone tell me what the cost of replacing the left front wheel bearing should be? I may be living in the past, but $300.00 seems like an awful lot to me. Thanks.

It's about $300 to $400...its not just the bearing that needs to be replaced in the Alero's. The entire hub assembly and wire harness needs to be done. I presume that that's why it's so much. I had to have it done in my right front wheel, but it was done under warranty.

I am told they aren't to bad to change yourself. Cost of just the assembly is just around $100 depending.

Becareful where you buy the part from. And make sure you keep your treciept for the warranty. I had to change mine on the same side twice in one year.

If you buy the hub assembly from somewhere OTHER then dealer (DONT buy it from dealer - they rip u off) It will run 150-200 dollars usually. It can be done yourself too for free, it'll take a few hours - but very doable. I did all 4 on my Grand Am after I rolled it (same setup / suspension)

trust me man buy that wheel bearing if u dont buy it ur tire could fall out or it could be cause of no braking take the 300 or 400 dollers and buy that wheel bearing

LOL - Rob, it's alright. Lowell has plenty of time before his "tire falls off". - which wouldn't even happen. Here's the deal with wheel bearings. I shocked the hell out of mine when I rolled my car and had to replace all four. It's cause slamming them down that hard dimpled the inside of the bearing chamber. So when I got up to speed, I would hear the bearings rumbling. I drove for about 6 months on those bad bearings before I changed them, and they were still doing fine - just noisy. Generally, after you first are able to tell that you need a new wheel bearing, you have a substantially long time before it will fail completely. Depending on the severity, you'll usually have lots of warning. The rumbling would get louder and louder over time, until eventually someday the bearing would get so worn that it would seize up - in that situation, the worse that could happen is that your wheel would lock up, and you'd end up driving into the ditch.
Lowell should take his time, and find the bearings for a reasonable price from somewhere other then a dealer. He has time - his tire is not going to fall off. The money saved will definately be worth it, and the bearings do not pose an immediate threat (unless he drove his car off a parking garage, then they might be pretty biffed up) lol
