need help on general Information about cars

I need help on just general info on cars i know more stuff then kids my age but it's like in depth things about cars.

When someone says i have a 305 in my car or a 350 or a 302 or something what does that mean. Size of engine and what is it going by.

305, 350, whatnot those are in cubic inches. Basically, a 305 is a 5 liter engine adn a 350 is about a 5.6 iirc. Im gonna try to squeeze a chevy 350 into my pathfinder, so, all's good.

1 cubic inch = .016387 liters

All the numbers you referred to are engine displacement measures in cubic inches. Most younger people are more familiar with engine displacement in liters than cubic inches, so there's your conversion.

Displacement is determined by this calculation:
Displacement = bore X bore X stroke X # of cylinders X .7854

If you're using inches for the form of measurement, you'll get cubic inches displacement. If you're using mm, you'll get cmm (cubic millimeters), which converts to cc (cubic centimeters) by dividing by 1000, which then converts to liters by again dividing by 1000.

For instance my car is a 2.2L or 137ci I believe.

I didn't see anyone actually answer the question. The calculations are all right (albeit simplified), but the actual question was what does the number mean.

Displacement is a measure of an engine's size. The size is calculated by the volume "displaced" by the piston...the volume in which the piston moves and not the size of the combustion chamber.

The calcuation is the same as finding the volume of a cylinder. It's simply (Radius)2 * (Height) * PI, where the radius is half of the bore and the height is the stroke. Then, just multiply by the number of cylinders.

A stock Chrysler 2.2L engine is 135cid.

A 350cid engine converts to (a large) 5.7L, not 5.6. A 351cid rounds to 5.8L.

That number is displacement. Think of the cylinder as just a simple cylinder. The piston is at the bottom of the stroke, and the cylinder is filled with water. The piston moves up to the top of the stroke. The volume of the water that just sloshed out is the displacement of that cylinder.

To find the displacement of an engine, pi x bore^2 x stroke x y, where y is the number of cylinders.

^ Bore is the width of the cylinder, and stroke is the length of the linear travel of the piston.
