i have this sound coming from under my engine and it only makes this noise in the 3-4k rpm range. only. it sound as if something is tapping on my block really fast with a small hammer. i thought it might have been the cat at first but after i jacked the car up and got under it and had a friend rev the engine i noticed that the sound was actually coming from the bottom area of the engine kind of around the oil sending unit but up in the oil pan. maybe around the oil filter.

now when i installed the engine back in july 04 i noticed a crack around the oil sending unit in the block. it turned out the crack was too much and i had to seal off the area. totally take out the sending unit. oh well no dummy light. my friend who is a mech said to use jb weld. he jammed some jb weld into it and tried to seal it off that way. but still leaked. we chipped off the jb weld and i decided to stick a large screw in there. that worked. but i could not get this one little turd of jb weld out!!! and now im windering if that could be it????
so does anyone know the way the oil flows in the engine and if that could be making the noise?

thnx for reading my damn novel and thnx for the input

Sounds like a spun bearing to me. You need to at least take the oil pan off and take the 4 rod caps off and look to see if a bearing has spun. It will only be a short matter of time before the rod comes loose or breaks.

ok now i have narrowed the sound down. it is the water pump. or the timing belt tensioner. and has anyone ever had to replace the tensioner? b/c i just did my timing belt and it seems it made the sound worse. and how tight should i tighten the tensioner down? and do you tighten the tensioner down?

i have thought about this. i spun a bearing back in june 04 and that is why i have the b20 now. it does not sound like that at all. the spun bearing was a sound that always happened. like i said IT ONLY HAPPENS AT THE 3k-4k rpm range. now i think my pilot bearing has to be changed b/c when i let off the clutch when parked it makes this tick tick tick noise. i can push the clutch in and let it out slowly and it will stop. now could this also make that noise? any input would help.

Well if it does not do it in any other rpm range than it won't be a spun bearing.
The timing belt did not fix it?
Does the sound happen when the clutch is pressed in? ie: when the clutch is in and you rev the motor to 3-4K rpm does it make the noise?
How loud is the noise?
Is it too loud that if you use a stethiscope(sp?) to determine whether it is comming form the oil pan, or tranny?
Sometimes ( and I know this is going to sound weird but trut me) you can take a long 3/8" extension and place your thumb over the end then put the other end to the oil pan. Now put your ear up to your thumb, then move it to different spots and see where it is louder. The stethescope (sp again) would work much better though.

a big screw driver works as well. just put the one end on the engine where you are trying to hear and put your ear up to the end of the handle.

good idea. i will try that tonight. at work now. and have not tried to rev it with the clutch in, but somethig tells me it will still do it. and just to understand this alittle better, what other problems could this be? somthing internal i am assuming. i understand there might be several. should not have bought this motor from some arab in washington.:banghead:

ok sound is coming from bottom front of oil pan. by the crank shaft. but more towrds the firewall side of the engine. could it be the oil pump? when i had the timing belt off i check the tensioner and the water pump to see if the bearings might be bad by wiggiling them around and the did not give. other than the sound the car runs great. i checked to see if oil was moving inside by taking the oil cap off, and oil is moving. damn cannot figure it out. i have taken it to others to listen to it and have different opinions from each. so damn confused.
