turn signals going out

in the past few days my turn signals have stopped working. I checked the fuse, but i know that they are good cause from time to time when i use the signals they will come on, but only for a brief period of time. I was hearing a odd sound when i would hit the lever turing them on. could this be something in the lever perhaps? a switch maybe, or a short? any advice?
