I have a 96 chevy lumina sedan, one day i had to rev it up just to get it to shift in order for it to even move, then only reverse ran and then nothing, fluid was a little discolored but not bad, changed filter and fluid, but still nothing, there was not grinding or vibrations or clatter before, just one day i had to rev it in order for it to shift. Any ideas, one person has told me, computer codes or soleinoid replacement, now i beleive its in the front of the engine on the drivers side, please help thanks......shur40k@yahoo.com :disappoin

Don't take my words for granted as I don't know much about automatic transmissions but I would check first the vacuum modulator. If it's not that one, then prepare for the worse...

Fopu's right, sounds like the seal blew in the modulator. That, or the line to it cracked. It is very easy to change, if you know where and what you are looking at. It just has one bolt that holds a clamp that keeps the unit in the tranny case. It is on the front, driver's side, down low, will be a small metal "can" about the size roughly of a 35mm film canister, maybe a little shorter, with a colored stripe around it. It has one vacuum line that attaches to it. This is usually a metal line, with rubber hose at the ends. It goes up to the intake manifold on the motor. Check both rubber ends for cracking, or swelling that could make it suck air. If that seems good, pull the line off at the tranny end. If any fluid runs out, the modulator is blown for sure. There are only about $10 or $12, I think. It would be worth trying, even if there is no obvious problem with it. Good luck!

Didn't mean to mislead you, but the modulator on these doesn't look the same as the ones I remember. It is larger, and odd shaped. But still works the same. I took a picture, to show you the location.
