I've got a 2000 Expedition with 130K miles. Service engine light came on in November and engine ran rough- replaced a coil. End of December the same thing happened when I was out of town and replaced it again. Last week, third time. My regular mechanic replaced the failed coil and all the spark plugs. All three are all on the passenger side.
My service light came on again yesterday. Help! What could be causing these coils to fail?

i feel your pain!, lost 2 coils in less then 50 miles driving, and them sucker's ain't cheap! while the failure of these are not common, you have to remember that these componants are subjected to water, heat, dust/dirt, and vibration, seems the most likely one to fail, is on the passenger side in the back, evidently water can drip on it. best thing to do is keep a good line of communication with your local dealer, mine gave me a discount on the 2nd repair.
this probably did'nt help much, but i do feel your frustration, this is my wifes car, so i get to hear it from her! and sometimes with seemingly little love in her voice! hehe!

I have a 2003 X, bought used with 50,000 on it, and owned it for a month and a coil went. Six days later another coil went. A month after that a third went.
The first coil cost me $70Cdn plus install, the next two cost me $142cdn each. The dealer told me the new coils are an improved model. Ford knows there is a problem but since it is not a safety issue too bad.
I have now gotten another month on it and no more coils. I did have to replace a door lock motor, rear wiper assembly and a mirror switch.
Oh well it is a nice ride.

I had a 2000 Ford Expedition until last Sunday. A year ago I replaced 2 coils with in 2 months. Both times the engine warning light never came on. After the coils were replaced the car seem to run rougher than it did before. In December another coil went out this time the engine light did come on. Three weeks later another coil went out. I asked the service manager why are the coils going out. He said since it has been raining the water splashes up from the street under the engine and gets into the coils and they rust. I asked if they had changed the design in the 2005 since this seems to be a very poor design and a problem. He told me no and I thought well I will not buy another expedition until they do. Two days after my car was fixed in the pouring rain I am an hour from home with two kids and another coil goes out. I make it to the closest Ford dealer and they didn't lift a finger to help me. I tried to find a rental car but all the places were closed. They said they couldn't take my information for my car and had no idea how I was to get home. I was so upset I went down the street to the Lexus dealer and traded the car in for a RX330. They didn't have the one I wanted but were willing to give me a car to drive home and bring back when they found the car . Talk about great customer service. They ended up finding the car I wanted 45 mintures away and brought it to me. I will never buy a Ford SUV again. Both my husband and son have F150's and love them. On top of the coil problem I was one of the lucky ones whose tire blew our on the freeway right as they recalled them. Ford wasn't very helpful then I had to tell them I thought the tires were recalled and then when they realize I was correct and my other tire was about to go they said it would take 10 days to get the tires in. I asked what was I suppose to do for a car for 10 days and they said it wasn't their problem. So we ended buying tires somewhere else and got some money back for the defective ones. I only had 80,000 miles on the car and really didn't expect so many problems so soon..

hello I feel all your pain we just had a tune up and drove out to Montana with a car trailer hauling a chevy just like it should be. the problem we had was I couldnt haul the piece of chevy up the mountain in Bute I was embarrassed that i had to pull of the chevy and drive it so that my piece of Ford could get up the big hill. The chevy guys were honking big time. anyways the grease monkey who put my plugs in decided to wrap electrical tape aroung the shank of the plug and for some reason it wouldnt get spark going up hill cant explain, but then the coils failed one stinking one after another. and still the exspensivdition still runs like crap, I am ready to jump ship to something a little less stinky Chevy Dodge but we love the ride. so I guess Ill stop crying good luck to you all. Oh yah I am an x Ford employee People just dont care where I work.
