Installing Alarm

So i bought an alarm and installed it myself. Yeah, im just good like that. LOL.

Anywho, im trying to hook it up to the parking lights. I found a website saying that the parkinglight wire is: "In the harness next to the passenger kick-panel." And the wire is red/black. I found a wire that was black/red... but I tried anyway. Turned out to be the starter (I think). So, the alarm goes off, and the car tries to start. Kinda funny. So, what wire is that parking lights?

Also, where is a wire for the dome light? My boy at circuit city saidthat i dont need to hook the wire up to the doors themselves, but rather to the dome light. Makes sense. Is there a wire somewhere in the dash thats connected to the dome light?

THANKS!!

the dome light is in the door jambs. on the bottom right of the passenger side, there's a rubber button that depresses when the door is closed. when the door is open, it activates the dome light.

i installed my alarm a year ago so i don't remember the wire colors. but i did locate the wire in the kick panel. it was hard to get to.

i'll thumb around my old notes and see if i can dig anything up for you.

ok, that didn't take long...

the black/red IS THE STARTER.
the one you're looking for is green/white (+).

the dome light source is actually called the door trigger.
it's red/green (-). you can source the wire where i told you earlier.

if you have a factory alarm like i did, what are you going to do with it?
i didn't disable mine so occassionally they'll go out of sync. it's no big deal though. personally i wouldn't mess with the factory alarm if you got it.

Which website did you aquire this info? Not sure if you can gain access to a wiring diagram for your vehicle from manufacturers website but I suggest you find a wiring diagram specifically for your vehicle, via a Chilton's or Haynes (or similar) repair manual available at local parts store. HOWEVER..... note that it is possible the books may not be 100% accurate. But certainly would help give you an idea of which color wire you really need to locate. Also, obviously the wire you need will lead to your headlight switch so the location suggested to you sounds like correct spot to look. Your dome light wire should probably be near there as well. If your alarm has voltage sense capability, this definitely the best way to wire up the trigger wire. Good luck.

If you bought an aftermarket alarm it should come with instructions. You can also ussually call the company and they will give you vehicle specific instructions and wiring diagrams. That's just what I've read. There's also a place on the net where you can buy vehicle specific wiring/alarm install turorials for like $4.

I was gonna get the Viper 791XV for like $200 (refurbished). What do you guys think? http://www.directed.com/security/viper/viper_responder.asp

it's illegal to have an autostart alarm on a manual tranny car. but i know how to bypass the clutch to get it to work. that being said, the turbo timer feature is very cool on that alarm. where are you picking that up for $200?

i woldnt buy a refurbished. clifford viper and a few other branches are all part of the same company i forget what its called though. somethin like DEI or something. anyway look around and see what you can find the cheapest htey are bascially allt he same. to find your dome or parking light get a light tester the screw driver looking thing with a light bulb in the handle and a point on the end with a wire attatched to hte handle. then just turn on your parking lights or dome light and poke around until the bulb turns on. when it turns on turn off your parkin lights or dome light to see if thats the one. all its doing is lighint up when those sources have power. your parking lights will go from the steering column down to the kcik panels. just poke around

yeah but there are other wires that might show there is current (i.e. light up the bulb in the handle of the screwdriver lokking thing) when switch to dome light or parking light is turned on. Like the wire(s) for the chime (ding) might have current when the dome light is switched on. Or wire(s) to the tail lights and/or turn signals can have current when parking lights are switched on.

So, you need the vehicles wiring diagram so yo have something to go by/fall back on

Or you can take advice from someone who says: "....get a light tester the screw driver looking thing with a light bulb in the handle and a point on the end with a wire attatched to hte handle."

I had a car starter installed on my talon (a manual transmision) and they didn't have the nutral switch in stock but wired it live anyway, well leaving the house in a hurry the button was pushed closing the door and the talon crashed into the back of my truck. glad you know how to bypass it though (place happyface here)
p.s. the remote didn't have a emergency kill on it either!

I realize that refurbished might sound bad but he's got good feedback on the alarms. There's also one other website that I know of where you can buy it new for a little more than this. I dont know if the responder is really all that needed but I want the remote start and turbo timer. Oh and yeah the company's called DEI Directed Electronics.

I dont think its illegal to instal an alarm on a manual car though.

Don't worry about anything being refurbished as long as it's done through the manufacturer. I buy refurbished Pioneer stereos and cd changers and have not had any problems yet.
I see it as this has been hand inspected and tested so it should be fine.

Also, being a DEI retailer, I'll tell you that the chances of the unit being defective at some time is close to 0%.

OK, so I went to my boy at Circuit City and he showed me what to do. I had killed my battery doing this with the dome light on! Duhh!! Anywho, the dome light wire is hooked up to the black/green (I think) wire coming from the dome light, in the pillar panel on the drivers side. The lights goto another green/white (i think) under the dash right by the fuse box to the left. Real easy. Circuit City roadshop employees have access to a HUGE database of everycar and what wires are what!! It's massively extensive. Lots of good information on their site, but only they can get in to it (not even me). If you ever need wiring help or got a question, call the road shop at your local CCity! They're great!
