I've gotten in to a debate with a friend of mine as to if i should use a parking brake on my manual transmission cavy. I think that it should be used, he does not. Just wondering.

Sorry if this is in the wrong fourm.

Now that I got to vote first it actually does make a difference. Who knew?

Whats so hard about yanking up on the lever?

And if you put it in gear when you park it, you dont need it, but its better to be safe than sorry I guess.

you cant power slide in a front wheel drive car... but your freind is probually thinking of when cars with parking brakes dont get used they freeze up because of the rust, if you use your brake regularly, you wont have this problem.. and its a good idea to use it with a manual..

I use miune even at stop lights so I don't have to hold a pedal. You have to dip the clutch when you start it so I guess you clutch and brake at the same time. Also if you put it on while stopped at lights on a hill you are less likely to stall as you can bring the clutch to the 'bite' before you release it, you'll know because the back of the car will dip and then you wont be embarrassed. Also you roll back into the Soccer mom up you ass in that minivan!!
Do use it for 180 turns in car parks around obstacles and stuff, love scaring my passenger!!!! :evillol: Use it or lose it!!

You can power slide all you gotta do is crank the wheel and yank the e brake (keep the button depressed for quick release) i do it all the time

thats not power sliding.. its e-braking, power sliding is with a rear wheel drive car where you goose the throttle and slide.. get it... power slide. i e-brake at every opprotunity, parking, going around corners.. empty snow covered car lots..

Ilike doing it near parked cars when I have a passenger It's great to scare 'em. I was doing e-brake turns, reverse donuts and the like in a tight loading bay once and that really shit my pass up!!!!!

I think its a good idea wether or not its manual or auto- it makes it easy on the trans when parked - especially on a hill - i see people do it all the time - when parked on a hill they dont use the parking brake an u hear that huge clunk when they put it in gear on a auto - ya thats not good for the trans... i own 5 manual trans. cars so its a habit for me since all my rides are manual an i feel my car is in safer a state when i walk away from it...
I used to use it to brake with when my rotors on the front of my car were so worn the rivits were almost ground off an i had huge ruts in my rotors - i was broke at the time now its different... but i had about four people in my shelby an was gettin of I-84 in PA an was like hey check it out i have not brakes as i depressed my pedal almost to the floor an was barely slowing down - @ 110 goin towards an exit ramp-that sure as hell scared the shit outa them lol - then when i started using my hand brake - they were like yo dude is this safe lol--- its all good now though - i take superb care of my cars now that i am well off...

In the GM owner's manual it says to parkt eh car in reverse and apply the e-brake for manual!

93_R/T_TT_Stealth
01-16-2005, 01:31 AM
ya cause reverse is usually the strongest holding gear in a manual trans. thats why ya can't go that fast in reverse in most cars with manual trans.'s

A couple things! The likelyhood of me htting anything else, especially yours is extremely unlikely. Aslo I by some extremly unlikely chance I should strike your car then you'd have to catch me first!!!!

LOL thats why everybody has that unidentified/uninsured insurance, so that in the instance somebody havin fun with their car gets a little carried away and hits one they're covered, so who cares, actually could you hit mine, Then insurance will pay for my body kit to be put on. Nuthin like knowin a GOOD body shop

Then I'd have a dent in my car! I guess I could strategically do it so I can get some kind of aerodynamic advantage!!!

i think its a good idea to use the e-brake with a manual cuz picture this, your car is parked in the street at night, you have in gear (any gear) and you dont have the e-brake activated, some drunk guy comes haulin ass down your street and slams into your car and pushes it forward/backward maybe 20-30 feet, now how good was that on your transmission thats IN GEAR, and the rest of your drivetrain for that matter..

When I DID own a 5-speed (87? Mazda B2000) I never put it in gear when I parked, I just used the e brake. I was bad about jumping in and turning the key, which will surprise you if it's in gear! But now most cars won't start unless you have the clutch fully pressed, even if it's not in gear.

I use the e-brake when I park in my auto too, it stops the car from rolling into park so hard, which is surley not good for the trans.

My brother in-law has an 87 Accord with a weak e-brake, so he has to leave it in gear, I always wonder, what if someone or SOMETHING bumps his car and it pops out of gear, good luck trying to stop it!

Isn't it bad for your brakes to do that a lot? (e-brakeing on turns) And I use my parking brake every time I park. Hence the name.

Well I've slightly stretched my cable but it wont do any damage unless the shoes are new and not yet bedded and this wont stop them from working.

Edit: Actually that just reminded me of putting new shoes on a mini that had drums all around, it was a 78 Clubman 997cc. To get the shoes to work their best you go for a drive just after installing them and then use them to the point where they get SO hot they fade. After this they resist fade a lot better. It's kind of scary though having faded brakes!!!

Everytime I park I throw my E-Brake/Parking brake and put it in first. Unless parked facing down a hill, I put it in reverse.

If you read the cavy manual it says to put it in reverse at all times and put ebrake up at all times, but, who cares, first/reverse. doesnt make much of a difference that I can see.

thank ya

i thought it was time for change.. just a preview of what you guys can expect if all goes well on my end. As long as i get my PT cruiser before winter comes my kit will be on and CF hood should be too. If the outlook is bad, i will be doing some other work first.

Love the sig CRJ, I almost didn't notice the CRJ across the middle. Is that your car or did you photoshop the kit, clears and hood on yours? It doesn't look like it. I like the kit, not too "ricey" <-- I hate that word! It has a very agressive look without going over the top. Damn, wish I had a 95 so I could get a kit, thay don't make shit for 92, at least not 4-doors. Oh well, just have to make my own, uhhhh huh huh!

Not mine, but it will look like this almost. Not sure what i want to do. Just ordered my A/F guage and mini tach tonight. Also working on upgrading my suspension to KYB AGX from their GR-2's. I found a site that will ship the CF hood for 38o for OEM style. These damn AGX's are going to kill me. 424 for the set and i still need 4 new tires. I was checking over my stash of goodies and realized i have nails in all 4 freakin tires. I knew i shouldn't have drove to BOCES and near that damn house project. Last time i pick people up.

Here's a pic taken in late fall.. of what i have collected so far.

Sure does, i haven't found the need to blow 200 bucks on a digital camera whereas that could be my new headers. You see Eibach Pro kit, KYB GR-2's ( soon to be sold back and swappin out for AGX's) CAI extension, RKsport engine mount box, New struts mounts... i'm too lazy to make the pile all over again and show the new stuff. Besides it will be a surprise to everyone in the fall. Do you have a cardomain website? or better yet www.imageshack.us and have them host them. Copy the exact link and post it here. THey have already put in the forum code and can work with them. My e-mail can't hold pics.
