If the bulb was wrong it wouldnt light. Its the flasher located bellow the steering coloumn. On my 93 its on the left of the steering coloumn. Look up in there high. It looks circular in diameter. Sought of like a capacitor. 2 wires. On the other side of the steering coloumn you will see another flasher. Those are your hazard lights. Replacing the flasher at Autozone will make both of them blink correctly.

Use of wrong bulb will cause this:
Taillight bulbs come in many flavors: 1096, 1196, 2096, and 3096 to name a few. Based on your early vehicle, you must have put in a 2096 or 3096. I once did this too so I am familiar with the symptoms (lack of flashing).

If the left side works you signal relay is working properly. The wiring system is designed so that if one or more bulbs is out the signal will not work, this is done to let you know there is a problem. The blinker relay works on total resistance of the circuit, in other words if there is not enough resistance in the circuit caused by the bulb filaments the relay will not cycle.
Did you check to see that the front and rear lights are okay.

All other lights work except left front and rear signals - they come on and stay on but do not blink . My thought was the flasher unit but the dealer said no

I had same exact problem. Replace the flasher unit! If it is not flushing and solid light on 1 side. and the other side flashes. Its a faulty flasher unit. Why listen or argue with the dealership when this is a 4$ part at your local car store? I had problems on my 93, replaced all bulbs all the way around. and still had no luck. Replaced the flasher unit, now everything works brand new. You will need to remove the bottom of the steering coloumn. You have 2 flashers back there. I belive they are both the same. 1 is for indicators, and the other 1 is for the hazard lightsl.

yea, not the whole dash completely.. buts its high, up in there. this is what i did in the parking lot of Advance auto....
drop the lower black piece of the dash, bellow the steering coloumn....
u will need a flash light, look up high in there...
like i said earlier the flasher for the indicatior is to the left of the steering coloumn, and the hazard flashers are to the right of the steering coloumn....
I pulled flasher, installed new flasher for about $5...
and left it hanging in the dashboard, after i replaced lower cover..
the next day i had to take the whole dashboard offf... to put the new flasher back in its original place.
Its a clip, the flasher snaps in.. that way you can actually hear it flashing when you are making a turn....
the hazard snaps into its own clip...
i do belive both hazard and indicator uses the same type of flasher...
to locate the flash look for a small metal cylinder with 2 wires plugged into it... should be a little bigger than a soda cover....
im certain this will fix ur problem.....
