I recently put in a 1500 watt amp in my 96 escort. The lights dimm whenever the sub hits. I talked to some people and they said that i should replace the alternator. I took a look at the alternator and figured that i could replace it myself. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on replacing the alternator and/or what kind of alternator i should get.
Thanks
Thanks

The problem is not the alternator. The problem is that the system is not designed to handle the drain from the amp. What I would do is install a two farad capacitor in the power line to the amp. It will take the drain off the system and maintain a constant voltage to the amp and therefore you will not see a voltage drop causing the lights to dim.
They are available on both EBay or from any stereo shop that installs amps. As for changing the alternator it is not hard to change. Just remove the belt, the mounting bolt and the wire off the back, replace in reverse order. But, save your money and just buy the capacitor.

Thanks for the info. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I'll check into both the capacitor and the alternator, my car is old and probably will need a new one soon anyways.
