i got a 93 cv p71. had a few probs but got it all fixed, but the dealership said i need to replace the cats. i cant afford to do this right now but am in desperate need of the car, and need it to run smoothly. if for now i take the cats off and clamp just pipes in there place will it throw codes? will it run ok? i will get the cats eventually but i cant afford it right now.

would it be better to gut them or just put on pipe?

To my knowlegde if you run with out just cats you will not set off any codes. Not sure how it will run but i have heard that it runs a little sluggish with out cats.

The car will have a rougher sound w/o the cat but most people hate having them so in my opinion leave the cats off they restrict the car too much.

to my knowlage w/o them it will boost torque and is highly illegal so if u ever plan to sell the car make sure to have the money to put some on just so u dont get ur ass kicked when the law comes down on u just thought u might wanna no

Removing the cats sets of a code. Dont know which excatly but the check engine light will be permanent, unless you disable the oxygen sensor in the H-pipe.
I have a 93 LX and I removed the four cats because its legal in Iceland.
But nice sound though! ;)

4 cats? mine has the 2 big cats under the front floor pans then goes aboout a foot then h pipe then goes to rear. the o2 sensors are in front of cats a ways. will the sensors still trick if the cats are gone? the exhaust looks stock, exept for the mufflers are glass packs and the silencers at the end of the pipes are removed.

yeah mine had 4... stock for sure. It would be interesting to hear from some others that have a crown victoria LX '92 and up with stock dual exhaust. About the sensor tricking after cat removal I dont know but the check engine light lights on when my car gets warm and doesn't go away until engine shut off. I have a question for you "tkhilliard": do you know how the sound changed after removing the silencers? How does it sound? I have fully open mufflers, no cats but silencers are there still. And it sounds perfect (not too much but very muscily). Thanks.

when i had the mufflers removed and packs put on the silencers were still on. when i was in the car it sounded nice because of the packs being right under me. but from the outside of the car it was still quite as new. even when the car drove away it was quiet. then i hacked of the silencers and put pipes in there place and it made a world of difference. after they were gone it had a nice rumble when it drove away. my only complaint is the cackle when the engine revs down. but im used to it now
