Motor swap

I have researched this, and I came up with doing a swap from a v-6 to a v-8 could be cheaper then actually selling the six and spending more money, about as much as doing a swap as the swap could possiable be only 3000 dollers, to buy a z or an ss. This is a very argumental subject, so in your guys views since only needing the motor and the tranny and lift pull drop push drop is what it takes for a swap in a fourth gen, how easy is it going to be and weither it could cause an insurance issue?

Cost depends on motor. If you are thinking LS1, they are expensive. Looking to sell mine off for a decent amount. $2K+, and that is a low figure.

The motor comes out from the bottom.

Insurance can continue to think the car is a V6.

I've thought about this myself, and my dad said that if I changed it out to a V8, and I wrecked, I'd be screwed over by the insurance company. I figure he was just saying that so I won't put a V8 in my car.

Insurance companies don't really care what you have under the hood as long as you pass emissions and is all 'legal'. Mine registeres as a 305 but I put a 350 in it and geico didn't give a rats ass. didn't go up a cent and they said it won't effect my coverage in any way. Maybe that's just geico..

Probably because it's still a V-8.

I have talked to a few people apound this question, I have found out it dont matter what you have as long as the vin says v-6 you will pay a v-6 and if you wreck your car, your value will equal that of a v-6. So all in all its a good deal, But again to get the motor and trans combo it could cost a good 2500 dollers, and about 500-1000 for the parts needed,
Ls1 motor and trans
Ls1 pcm and wireing harness
ls1 k-member and motor mounts
ls1 radiator
ls1 coolent and heater hoses
ls1 steering rack and linkage
ls1 throttal cable
custom fuel setup (or a 97 corvett fuel rails)

Your best bet would be to look around local junk yards and Ebay to get these items for as cheap as you possibly can if money is the issue. Like motor mounts , throttle cable , dumb crap like that which won't matter if it was used or not.

your biggest problem will be passing emissions.

the sticky situation with insurance companies is that if you do it without telling them, and then they find out, they can technicly sue you for lieing about what kind of car you had. which is fraud, saying you have a sixer for less cost than if you had the V8. But that is worst case senario.

the general responce to this swap i have heard is that is is more cost efficient to sell the sixer and buy the V8 model. but i havent priced out the two options.

It seems like you would eventually save money with the switch compared to buying a V8 equipped car with the cost of insurance. Especially if you're young.

actually it will save you lots of money to to sell the six just like 89 said. a few years ago i had a 91 RS with a 3.1 multiport F.I. after owning it a while i was sick of it being slow. i wanted to put a 305 in it and change the tranny to a manual. i found a motor for 900, then i was going to have to buy a new wiring harness, 3-400 more bucks, and a fuel injection manifold and all that crap another 900-1500 bucks. i didnt have that kind of cash then, so i traded the car off, i found a nice 90 rs camaro down in gate city virginia for 3500, i got 2500 for my sixer, i just paid 1000 and got what i wanted. a 305 and a 5 speed manual. was adult owned and garage kept.

Actually, it could save you tons of money to do the swap with the fourth gens, but i do hold my own opinion. personally you can find a motor for cheap, depends if the person needs the cash or not, But im in a finical(sp) sitituation right now and i cant afford the loan on my car at the moment. (mainly blame it on my managers biest choice on who gets hours and who doesnt) i think hes jealous of my car. Anyhow, i might just have to sell off the camaro.....any takers?

The reason i brought up this subject was cause i was web surfing and i found a dude with the name of magnus on http://www.mfba.org/, mid west f body's thats done this swap two or three times and was successful and appoints that it is cheaper and given out a site where he got his motor, and ls1 into a 97 bird, with the tranny cheap and the place really worked with him...http://www.tacreationsusa.com/v8.htm is the site that ive been looking though with "cheap motors"

Also, if you are interstead about the maro, drop me a line at [email protected] (cheap to)

The difference between insurance for a six and an eight is negligible at best. Last time I checked, it made no difference with Allstate....

I think it's a myth from back in the day when they actually DID screw you for having a large V8...back in the days when rates were set based on HP.

its no different with nationwide either. but it does matter if its a v8 and a young driver. i guess they dont get it. you can be killed in a v6 or a 4 cyl. just as easy as a v8!

Speaking of which, Have you guys seen them spy camaras ontop light poles? what do they do when you slide halfway though one, then back up to where your supposta be?(partically i saw some green in the corner of my eye, to look up it was red cause i wasnt paying attetion, slide into the middle of the intersectoin (ice) So....how do them camars work?

well around here in lexington ky they arent giving out tickets w/ them yet they are just used to watch the traffic like in the morn. for that channel that just shows u alot of main road to see if they r clear, but there is a certain kinda license cover that puts off a kinda glare at those angles

KaotiKCamaro5

or just spray your license plate with clear coat and give it a couple coats of wax.. the internal flash on those cameras will make the whole thing appear white..

and as far as the swap goes, i to have looked into it many a times.. and trust me.. it wont cost you 3000 for the entire thing.. i've seen some cheap LT1 setups with the tranny and computer go for 2 grand or so(with over 100K miles), but after shipping that damn thing.. then all the other parts that go along with it like you said, and labor is gonna kill you if someone else has to put it in for you... trust me.. just buy a new one.. because after that you gotta worry about the mileage on the car, sure the motor has 100,000.. but the frame and body may have 140,000... and when you ever go to sell it, the vin will come back as a V6.. not a Z28.. and i dont care what engine it has in it.. if its not registered as a v8 car, i wouldnt pay more than what i would for a v6, you get screwed there.. so just sell off the sixer.. and run for an 8.. thats exactly what im doing.. it seems like the only logical idea now..

there are definately more negatives than positives from the situation.. in my opinion

Hey, would swapping a new motor with computer and so and so such stuff change the number on the odometer, cause i figured since its all digital and its info is held somewhere like a pcm or a computer or something...that if you changed it with another it changes the number...even though it sounds illegal, but would it...lol its a stupid question but im just curious...

we have several around town. thats why i have a tinted lisense plate cover. its not so dark that its illeagle but its smoked enuff to make it hard for those cameras to see the plate, but they'ed need a pretty damn quick camera to catch me barreling through a damn yellow light.

why do i feel like we had this convo before? ill say what i did then.... unless u do all the work yourself and dont have to pay anyone to do the swap i guess u could do it for under what a z would cost you. having a lift to get the motor out, or having the patients to take the radiator and half the engine apart and off to slide that thing out then go 4 it. since i dont have the equipment needed it wouldnt be feasible 4 me 2 do it because it will cost me a butt load. good luck man hope it works out 4 u
