a couple of weeks ago one of the idiots at work was caught smoking weed on night shift:( and fired:) .At the regulr shift meeting last week, the plant manager announced that he intended to introduce mandatory random drug testing"for safety reasons".

I was appalled.
We have about 135 staff left on the floor.70% of them are women, mainly older women at that.Completely out of character,I stood up and argued with the boss, pointing out that the actions of one foolhardy teenager should not result in grandmothers and other decent folk having to piss into a sample cup on demand whenever it suits the boss. Our union delegate tried to gloss it all over, but a lot of the ladies were quite upset by the whole concept. The meeting quickly deteriorated into a chorus of heckling....and the boss backed down.

I was happy with the result...the idiot stays fired, the testing idea is scrapped, and I have made some friends among the floor staff.......

but I am also offside with the boss, and the union delegate. To cap it all off ,some of the staff have suggested that I stand as delegate at the next union election in May.......

My head hurts:bloated: :bloated: :bloated: Any advice would be good.
Thanks:)

Well IMO and the job i do i'm for it mainly due to the fact that i like to know the guy i'm working with is not affected by any drugs or beers etc.
I need the guys i work with to be 100% focused on what they are doing because you slip up once and you dont get another chance.

It would be very hand to police though. We all know how long drugs can stay in your body.
There are still to many questions to be asked as to how/when/why etc.

Weve had this fight at work for months now and i dont thing they will ever get it sorted to please everyone.

As for you being the union man....go for it. You sound the type of person that will sort things out and be strong for your work mates

Don't worry about being offside with your boss that is the way things are ment to be.

You did the right thing sticking up for what you believe is right (I commend you for that, most people wouldn't have the balls).

If you feel you could handle the union delagte position and could again help out those around you then put your name in the hat. If you don't want the extra stress and responsibility then don't.

No one can force you to do what you don't want to do

After what you said and did, you should stand up and become the delegate. If your union boss isn't doing what the members want, then he's not for the job.

On the other hand, can you say for sure. 100% sure that is, that older people, including old ladies, don't smoke pot?

You definitely did the right thing. Random drug testing bites. (and all because of one moron!)

I'd probably stand for delegate. If you're off side with the union guy, it might pay to be on his side for a while. :)

I am absolutely sure that the old ladies are at the heart of the drug conspiracy.:bandit:

Thanks for your input guys....:)

don't think the old dears are dealing coke, speed, crack or wacky tobacky at the plant, but I'll call in the s.a.s. just to be on the safe side.....The wombat who got fired was causing a safety issue...he was sneaking out of the plant and got stoned and fell asleep in the railyards.Lucky he got caught and fired before he became just another stain on a dirty locomotive....the only crack problem we have at the plant is when the laundry shrinks the overalls.....and I have decided not to stand for union delegate....there's too many pissy little politicians at work. But I am glad I roused the rabble, and if shit like this happens again,I'LL BE MAKING SURE THAT THE UNION DELEGATE KNOWS WHAT HE'S THERE FOR!
