I like to use white primer for, white, red, silver, yellow, and other light colors. for darker colors, grey or red primer works good. you can also tint primer to match the final color.

White will never change your final color while gray will. So if you have to buy only one, get White.
and NEVER user testor primer.. NEVER !

Tamiya or DuPont VariPrime. The ONLY color caveat with regards to primer is that if you lay white glosscoat over white primer, you could have a problem judging coverage. If you lay white over a lite grey primer, you can easily determine coverage, BUT, you must be careful not to wetsand through the topcoat (like you can with white over white)

i typically stick to a gray primer. i use mainly duplicolor products and have yet to see a duplicolor white primer. I always, if spraying a light color, lay down a good base of white paint before spraying the final color.

I use grey primer so I can tell where I already painted. Sucks when you can't tell where you had painted before and you lay too much on one area, and not enough on another.
