Chopped Mufflers..I Finally Did it..Sounds Good..

Today, i call up a couple shops, all to see how much $$$ to simply chop off my 2 mufflers. I finally found a place, American Muffler, which charged $25 no tax.

I had them cut it (they used a saws-all with a fine tooth blade) right after the muffler housing/back. Nice and neat. The two guys comlimented me on the car, lol, everyone says they never seen this kinda car in such good shape :-)

SOUND...........

I'm walking back to my car (cars like 70ft away) and i'm like, oh man, it's not loud. Then i realize my car aint running.. Once i start my car, i was like DAMN..this shit sounds sick-my exact words. At under 1800rpms, it is LOUD, pretty much Mustang GT loud. Once you go over 3K it sounds alittle droney. But when you floor it from a stop-INTENSE.

Power Loss......

I've read so many thing about back pressure, if you keep everything stock, as in catalytic converter, and resonater, there is slim to none loss. I've noticed no torque loss at all, and because of the exhaust sound, it makes you feel as if the car is faster...lol..

Weight......

Both my mufflers together weigh 22.8lbs, the two chrome straight pipes i put on, weigh a total of 4.4lbs together, thats 18.4lbs gone.

Install......

Do NOT just slip on the two straightpipes, and use a round clamp. You only have like 3/4 of an inch to play with if the mufflers where cut close to the muffler. What i did was go to home depot, and got 3 inch 1/4wide stainless nut/bolt for each pipe. Drilled a hole directly through the 2 pipes and the exhaust, and slipped them on, and bolted them in place. USE LOCTITE.. This alone is good enough to hold them in place-more then enough.

Inspection.....

Thats the reason i didn't have them welded on, first off, the nut/bolt connection is more sturdy anyway. AND when i have to get it inspected, all i got to do is take the pipes off, sleeve the exhaust pipe then connect the sleeve to my mufflers-and hang them up with those rubber hangers. KEEP YOU MUFFLERS.

Now, just when everything was good, my freaking radiator fan said BYE BYE.. Anyway, if you have any doubts, DON'T, DO IT. I have a 4.6 V8, if you have the V8, do it.

Long thread, yeah, got nothing else to do :-)

I like the way they sound with straights.

Today on the way to get my coffee, i had what looked like a 01/02 chevy impala next to me with a supercharged 6. He had dual straightpipes on it-sounded like SH*T.

I wish i was driving my tbird, and he heard what a v8 sounded like, DAMN IT. Can't wait to get my car fixed :-( Nothing like driving around in my mothers 92 escort-it looks as if it should be on pimp my ride-that bad.

That reminds me of long ago when I had a 67 Stang that the body was well rotted but inside was a Boss 351 4 speed with 4:57 gears. Many a Camaro and Firebird went down in flames! Sleepers are the greatest!

Mine are chopped and I love the way it sounds. Now I just need to get some new chrome tips bc the old ones fell off. Damn that rust. Damn this Michigan weather. I'm looking at some angled cut dual tips for both sides, anybody have any suggestions?

Yeah i was thinking about running bent, 90 degree angle chromes, exiting right behind the rear tires-on the side of the car. But the straights i got now make it look like a mercury merauder.

BTW, ever notice that if you leave it with the mufflers cut off-and just the exhaust exiting UNDER the car, makes it LOUDER. Almost like gives the exhaust an enclosure-like subs :-) But to loud in the cabin-sheesh..

Be sure the pipes come out from under the car or there is danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.

wont it be hard to remove the straight pipes for testing if you put loc-tite on them? (Never used the stuff before)

What do you mean remove the straight pipes?

You mean remove the mufflers to see what no mufflers soundlike.

wont it be really hard to get them off with the loctite?

No, they make a blue loctite, and a red loctite-the blue makes the screw threads/nut not vibrate loose-but can be loosened with alittle extra exertion.

The red is permanent-which is REALLY hard to loosen.

cool. Do you think that would sound good on a V6?

It isn't the best sound in the world, but I did it to my old 3.8. It is really personal opinion.

On a 3.8 6, no, it wouldn't sound to good.

I've read, and heard that with a V8, you can just chop the mufflers and get a descent sound, but on a 6, you NEED to do the whole exhaust for it to sound good.

Isn't your car a V8..? i think i saw V8 badges on it..?
